This is so new, it's only a few minutes old.

Rumsfeld, set to basically read prepared statements before the Senate Armed Services committee, I think, had made a few comments concerning the abuse of prisoners in Iraq when from the back corner of the room, a woman began to scream out 'What about..." and a list of different abuses and outrages in Iraq. The crowd she was with then started screaming 'Fire Rumsfeld! Fire Rumsfeld!', and being prepared, had come with huge signs.

My god, was Rummy humiliated! It was hilarious! No wonder Bush sequesters people blocks away.

Anyway, this took about 5-6 minutes, and then the crowd was escorted out.

Rumsfeld's comments were crap. He said something to the effect of 'look what happens in a democracy when people do wrong. The world should judge us by our actions.' What he meant was our actions since discovering the abuses in Iraq, in terms of discipline, but if taken another way, judging us by our actions is already being done internationally.

Witness also the friends and family of the main female abuser: "She's not like that. She was just caught up in the whole craziness of it." Guess what, douche bags - She IS like that, and we've got the tape to prove it.

The whole thing is, of course, being handled poorly. Rumsfeld should have gone to Iraq, secretly if necessary, and personally apologized to the prisoners, along with top brass. Instead, his opening statements were about forming a committee to study the current investigations to determine whether there should be further investigations, and those reports have to be completed in - get this - 45 days. There is too much "investigation" already.

All I know is, if I were the Prez, and this sh!7 were to happen on my watch, and my Defense Secretary had kept the info from me and I had to find out about it by watching the TV news, then Rumsfeld's ass woulda hit the pavement too quick to talk about. I MIGHT let him get away with being lightly courtmartialed. IF I'm in a good mood.

Has GW fired anyone? Look at all the contraversies over the last few years. WMD, 911 lack of communication, Bin Ladin on the loose, poor post war planning...

CIA, FBI, Defense.......ect. All sorts of f-ups and we get the same "Duuuuuh I didnt know about it." from the Dept heads. Its their job to know, and its their responsibilty.

In the business world Managers heads roll if theres problems with their dept.

Bush fired Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and economic adviser Lawrence Lindsey -- and he let EPA chief Christine Todd Whitman leave her post -- that's about it. More analysis on this issue here.

He fired Whitman, just didn't have the guts to admit it.

He basically fired her about 2 weeks into the administration, when he overruled her publically. She should have quit then and joined the Democratic party, she's not particularly unqualified.

Yeah, real funny! Reminds me of when Republicans broke into the Broward County, FL courthouse and shouted down the re-count.

True believers of the left or right have more in common with each other than they do with me. I am disgusted by them all.

I watched this live. They just looked like jackasses. He just sat there and sipped his water. I'm not sure it took all of 5 minutes.

Enjoyed the article..

Regarding Tennet:
To think: Bush had two solid chances to pass blame intelligence oversights on Democrats but instead he chose to stick with a man whom he thought was more likely to get the job done.

Bush wasn't ruthlessly partisan. He didn't discard a man for the sake of convenience. And those are qualities that Washington wags simply cannot grasp.

When Cmdr. Waddle brought his submarine to surface in February 2001, he inadventantly killed 9 people. The investigation concluded that he was "not guilty of criminal intent or willful wrongdoing," yet he was forced to resign from the navy.

Someone needs to be held accountable for this mess and suffer consequences more serious than resigning from the military.

---------------

Also, which pinhead decided to use Iraq's most infamous prison for detaining prisoners without even changing the name? Tearing down the prison would have been a public relations coup and more buiness for Halliburton.

----------------

There is one very tiny positive thing coming from these revelations: I no longer have to listen to conspiracy kooks go on about how this administration has already caught Bin Laden and is waiting until October to release the news.

One has to wonder if Rumsfeld keeps his brain in his head or in jar bay the door.

Did anyone else notice how he said that during his weekly meetings with the President, that he does not take notes?

Shoot! I meet with my boss about every week or two and I always take notes; and I can assure everyone if I was meeting with someone like the President you can bet the house that I would take notes on that meeting!

Ugh!

So, putting underwear on someone's head, is more serious than accidentally killing someone?

On Morning Sedition today on Air America radio was a comedy bit:

On May 7th, Donald Rumsfeld was asked to remove himself from his place of residence. That request came from his president, George W Bush. Deep down, he knew he was right, but he also knew that someday he would return to him. With nowhere else to go, he appeared at the home of his former associate, Saddam Hussein. Sometime earlier, the United States military had thrown him out, requesting that he never return. Can two unhinged despots share an apartment without driving each other crazy?

So assuming that Rumsfeld goes, who is there that commands enough respect both domestically and internationally to begin to restore people's faith in the US military?

I was referring to (A) the 25 deaths under investigation, two of which have already been classified as murder by the U.S. military justice system and (B) the "numerous incidents of sadistic, blatant, and wanton criminal abuses were inflicted on several detainees." (quote from Major General Antonio Taguba in the Abu Ghraib report)

I'm confused by your statement. Apparently I saw something quite different. When the abuse was discovered there was a press conference and it was announced to the entire world, not once but twice. There is an ongoing investigation. In fact there have been many investigations by the military for abuse. Actions had already been taken before the release of the pictures. Rumsfeld did not inform Bush. It was a mistake and Rumsfeld took responsibility and appologized. He vowed to do what was necassary to right the wrongs.

Why should Rumsfeld be fired? Please note that I have not used any provocotive language (which is difficult for me) :) Could you please respond in kind?

Well, he's one of the places that the buck stops.

I am leaning toward the idea that he should be fired, cold-turkey, but the fact he appears to have withheld stuff from 'W' and so on is part of that.

A great big THUD of an investigation, soldiers in jail, and I might have felt otherwise.

None of this 'hide it until you can't any more'.
