Today Basra was handed back to the Iraqi troops, with the UK simply in a training and overwatch role.

Good times?

Not quite right to say it's a British withdrawal - we've now handed back control of security in all the regions we had responsibility for, to the elected representatives of the Iraqi people but we still have many troops in Iraq.

Yes it is good but does it mean that the areas are now examples of well governed, safe regions in a country - sadly they are far from that.

it's interesting how low key this is - both in news coverage and responses in JREF....

this does mark in effect disengagement from the iraq conflict - and our role to stay in base and leave the running of the region to Iraqis really is a pretty ignomous exit....

given that southern iraq has just been given over to militias - and with the fundamentalism, poor security, continued violence and continued poor infrastructure it's hard to see any real kind of success upon which the withdrawl was based....

still, i think it's the right decision - it'll be interesting to see what happens in basra in the coming months....

You do not need many troops if all they are doing is training. Also it means that terrorists are killing Iraqs. This will not be as popular as killing <insert obscene word meaning undesirable foreigner invaders>. This means that the terrorists are operating in hostile territory. This does not means that terrorism will stop, just that it will be small scale, in every way.

What does that mean?
