This time in San Francisco.
This farce has gone on for too long. I still think the California Democratic Party was basically dumb to let her skate to the Nomination again.

Apparently out again already. Gavin Newsom is praying for her to hold on.

But in a deep red state like California, what other Democrat could possibly have replaced her?

Sarcasm aside, it's not like she's been grooming a successor to take over her connections and influence. It's not even likely her most powerful patrons would even be interested in transferring their allegiance to such a person. They've probably already made their own contingency plans, and are content to ride out this horse before switching to the next nag in their stable.

Here's the problem in a nutshell:

1. Kamala Harris resigned from her senate seat to become vice president after the 2020 elections.

2. California Governor Gavin Newsom chose Alex Padilla, who is neither Black nor Asian nor female (unlike Harris) to replace her. To quell the uproar over that pick, Newsom pledged to nominate a black female to the Senate in the event he was faced with an opening.

3. Given that Feinstein was obviously not going to be able to run in 2024, several prominent Democrats have announced their intention to run. Only one of those is a Black female, Barbara Lee.

4. If Newsom lives up to his promise he will have to pick a Black woman. And he pretty much can't escape that if he wants to have a chance to run for president.

5. Some rising white stars in the party like Katie Porter and Adam Schiff have also announced their candidacy, and would hate to find themselves up against the only Black woman in the Senate.

Kinda sad. Is there nobody in her life that has enough affection for her to end this very public performance of elder abuse?

Those of us lucky enough to grow old need to plan soberly about what advanced age might look like, and have the humility to accept a graceful entry into their golden years while they still have their wits about them enough to do so. Not safe to assume your mental and physical health will be good enough to defer these kinds of decisions. Much better to chose your own terms rather than have terms thrust on you, like Feinstein here.

What's stopping her? The weekend at Bernie's routine seems to be working fine. Just keep her entourage around to remind her what decade it is and wheel her around to all her appointments and she can keep this up until she finally drops dead.

You have to understand that Feinstein is something of an institution. She's been a fixture in California politics ever since she shepherded it into joining the US.

It's more than that. A loss of one Dem senator means the Dems lose their majority in the senate. It's that simple.

California has a Democratic controlled state government and it's safe to assume a reliable D replacement would be selected.

Do you really think it's safe to let the Republicans be in charge for even a small length of time?

Seems preferable to having the business of the Senate being contingent on whether a 300 year old woman has enough mental clarity to be wheeled into the office.

That's not the issue. If the Dems go against her in the primaries, and she wins anyway, the Republicans can use that in the general election.

I live in California, I have no doubt we would elect another Dem senator anyway, but the Democrats don't want to split the party. They just want her to finally give it up.

There are pros and cons for Newsom having to appoint a Senator. it's probably the biggest power a Governor has on the Federal level and can earn you lots of favors politically, but no matter who he picks it will piss off somebody.

I'm going to laugh my ass off if Feinstein addles her way into giving California a Republican senator

how would that happen? California has the "jungle" primary. In all likelihood the two names on the general election ballot will both be Dems.
