Hmmm, is it national security, political intrigue or they just like listening in on phone sex? ;)

Audit shows FBI snooping underreported

POSTED: 10:36 a.m. EST, March 9, 2007

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The FBI failed to report accurately how many people it snooped on using anti-terror measures, a government audit revealed Friday.

Demands for banks and phone companies to hand over people's private information without telling them may also have gone beyond what is allowed by the Patriot Act, the report showed.

The audit shows the FBI "was sloppy when it should have been diligent", one official with early access to the report said, and a statement from the Justice Department said Attorney General Alberto Gonzales had told the FBI "these past mistakes will not be tolerated."

Officials say the report found the FBI underreported the use of national security letters by 20 percent.

I'm sure we all feel safer now that Alberto "Tio Taco" Gonzales is aware of the problem.

Just joking, Al ;)

So much has been said about the Orwellian nature of the Patriot Act, and yet I have never met anyone who has told me he was inconvenienced by, or had knowledge of, being snooped upon, questioned, or falsly accused. Yes, I know-Many of our phones are all tapped and we just don't know who is listening, but they are...

Still, has ANYONE reading this post been hauled into an office in a big building downtown with dreary fluorescent lighting, stale donuts, and burnt coffee, and given the full body cavity search so to speak? (Other than Shemp)

Had this happened to anyone on this forum, would they be able to reply?

I dunno. I consider the government ignoring any of the Bill of Rights a rather big inconvenience.

Duh. But sometimes it is helpful on this forum to avoid the obvious, and challange the consensus. The government is legally allowed, and will continue to be, even under President Hillary, to snoop to a degree. Still, I recall that when the Patriot Act was enacted, many feared having the Feds pull their cars over randomly, having their apartment doors kicked down by mistake, being tailed by black helicopters, and being jailed for no reason. I realize my opinion is unpopular here, but I ask if anyone here has KNOWINGLY suffered such unjustices?

The defense of the FBI seems to be a variation on the "if you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to worry about" justification for intrusive government.

"Sloppy when it should have been diligent" should translated into Latin and made the official motto of the government.

Who feared these things?

At least the "mistakes" were caught by a gov't audit, and not from a leak and a newspaper article.

Baby steps.

It appears that zakur has answered both our questions by bumping this thread.

I know the answer to that one!

They were bad guys anyway, so the FBI just used all the tools available to catch them!

Never mind those pesky "Rights" things that would prevent them from doing this without due process, were it not for the (misnamed) Patriot Act.

OK. So what would be a more appropriate name for the "Patriot Act?"

The Loophole in the Law act?

The Unpatriotic Act? (I think few of the founding Patriots would agree with it)

The Divert the Public Attention act? I kinda like that - DPA, kinda has a nice ring to it, dontcha think?

I think I like Unpatriotic Act best. Sums the whole thing up neatly in IMHO :)
