FBI rewards

Quick question: the FBI was offering a $100,000 reward for that crazy-polygamist Warren Steed Jeffs. He was caught on a traffic stop by a Nevada Highway patrolman. Is he eligible for that $100,000? It seems unlikely to me since the guy was doing his job. But even if he's not, is the Nevada State Highway Patrol eligible? Can the money go to the department? Or are rewards only meant for private citizens?
 
Very doubtful. I think all state agencies make it illegal to accept rewards. If they could, then you'd have a protection racket instead of a public law enforcement agency.
 
I do not think that police officers, public officials, or anyone else deemed to be a law enforcement officer can legally accept rewards for catching criminals since they are already supposed to do that.

However, when such a thing happens, the person in question can be rewarded in other fashions such as promotion, commendation, a party, etc.
 
And, as a citizen who loathes things like Jeffs, I would not be worried about rewards if I had a chance to catch him/pass useful info to authorities. Rewards should not be necessary.

I figured as much. I just thought that the FBI may pass some of that cash onto the arresting department.
