FALWELL: Well, I have to admit that I am not -- I am more of a fiscal conservative than some there -- but I want to say that I -- that is not where my heart is. My heart is in the sanctity of life and marriage and values and defense against terrorism. I support what the president's doing in Iraq, and if they're spending too much money, then I'll let someone else yell about that. But this president -- it's like this Mark Foley thing -- that's not going to discourage any evangelicals I know from voting. We lived through Bill Clinton, and this situation with Foley is minuscule in comparison. So, I really think it's making a mountain out of a molehill.

At least Clinton didn't have a relationship with a minor. The foley thing isn't the worst thing in the world but that scum should still go down. Falwell is unbelievable, this relationship is homosexual, between an adult and a minor, and adulterous, things that are on his no no list and he had the nerve to call this miniscule in comparrison to what clinton did?

Well, Clinton's greatest failing was that he won the election, was from the south and was popular. Had he payed homage to Falwell then he might play a different tune.
 
Somehow it seems mundane that Falwell will say something silly, hateful, pointless, or partisan ....

I didn't think Folley was married, the homosexual and age issues stand. And I thought Falwell didn't like homosexuality?
 
Falwell may have been speaking about the relative scale of the protagonists. Foley was generally an unknown Congressman while Clinton was President of the United States.

I just can't understand why Clinton's BJ is still making such a difference. You'd think that Mr. Religious Falwell, who is SO against homosexuality, would think Foley's debauchery more damning. Of course, I suppose one can be against abortion AND engage in cruising for young men.

IMHO, of course, I believe Falwell, like many of his ilk, is a Republican first and religious second.

I respectfully disagree. He is Christian first, and like many hard right Christians and "Moral Majority" sorts, chose the lesser of two evils (the Republican Party) as the most likely party to help advance his beliefs and platforms. He is part of a bloc of "the Religious Right" who hijacked the Republican Party in the late 80's, like the socialist left hijacked the Democratic Party in the 1960''s. It was the very godlessness of that strain of the Democrats (who Coulter so excoriates in her latest bood) that gave him and other Moralites a foil, a bad guy against which to posit a good guy: anyone but them. (Post JFK Dems)

Were there a solidly grounded, and funded, third party of Paleoconservatives running about for Jerry to latch on to, a party who had a shot at getting a bunch of seats in Congress, I suspect Jerry would glom onto them and ditch the "prissy" moderates left in the Republica party post haste.

Pat Buchanan might be happy to have him, or not, I am a bit unsure on what Buchanan is up to these days.

Technically, Foley didn't break any laws and Clinton did, but that's due to the fact that Foley was never forced to testify under sworn oath. Frankly, I don't think a single one of our politicians would have a clean record if the things they say were sworn to in court.

Well, yeah. If you're a man cruising for young men, the odds that somebody is gonna get pregnant and need an abortion drastically drop. Unless there is immaculate conception.
