Fake Art on Display.

So, for the next two weeks or so, the Victoria and Albert Museum (London) is hosting a display entitled: The Metropolitan Police Service's Investigation of Fakes and Forgeries.

Which raises the question: Is a fake art, if you don't know it's a fake?

Let battle commence!

A lot of originals aren't art as far as I'm concerned ..

Good art is good, even if it's a copy ..

I remember seeing a Nova episode on art forgery. They profiled a fellow who had "reformed" and was now doing "reproductions", identified as such to the buyer. The amount of work he put into each painting was remarkable, down to salvaging pieces of panel from period furniture...
Another artist showed how simple it was to reproduce charcoal and pencil drawings by using a projector... Of course, you had to have the original on hand.
Her reproductions (intended for commercial sale) looked exactly like the originals.

Yeah, refinement and growth of an idea that the original creators let stagnate is not 'pastiche'.

That said...

From an artistic point of view, you can debate endlessly about it.
But from a legal point of view, fakery is fraud,period.
