Facial expressions of TAM5 speakers and performers

I snapped about 2000 frames of the speakers and performers at TAM5. You could say I was focused on the photography, but then someone would hurt you.

I kept about 10% of the shots. And I fussed and fiddled to make them presentable. When you pick 1 in 10 shots, you have the luxury of catching some keepers with nice facial expressions.

TAM5 Conference Photos
Randi Shermer Scott Gershenfeld Bidlack Swiss Brown Penn Teller Wiseman Sagal Dikkers Plait Renni Gillespie Bailey Hitchens Belleci Savage Parker Stone Sturgess Green Graham Watson Switzer Novella Hall Radford

I hope I made all the TAM5 VIPs look as cool as they really are. No mean feat, but hey; aim high.

Ouch! Dangit! Whose orange cat is this that just bit my wrist? Man, that smarts...

Enjoy the show.

Thank you so much for sharing, phyz! These photos are wonderful!

They are fantastic, Phyz--and I heard you mentioned and praised on skepticality--(so now I know your real name and won't be screaming "fizz" into crowds hoping the red haired guy turns around....)--

Of course you will make your students listen to the podcast, so they can understand just how cool their teacher is! You can even run it with your gorgeous slide show in the background. Too cool.

OOh--the one of you and Adam Savage is awesome too. I bet the youth of Sacramento are impressed...that one is poster worthy...!

I may have said this before, but I'll say it again. Superb shots! Some of the best!

By the way, was there a predisposition to having male speakers who were bald? (Not that there's anything wrong with that! Baldness, I mean.) But jeez, the speakers really looked like a bunch of eggheads. (And one of them--who might have been bald but I couldn't tell for sure--was wearing this outrageous hairpiece, made even more absurd by his eighteenth century garb. What was he supposed to be, a clown of some kind?)

I also noticed that folks like Adam Savage and Trey Parker seemed to think that they were supposed to be bald, as they had rolled their hairlines back for the conference.

(In case anyone is wondering, I'm still insanely jealous of you folks who attended.)

I totally avoid photographing the speakers, because I know I will get lots of great shots from the people that KNOW what they are doing.

I also have 2 cute daughters that make any shot look good...

but thanks! The rest of us depend on good photographers like you!

Pretty good. I shot plenty myself, but many didn't turn out too well..
It seems like it should be so easy to get nice shots of the speakers, but it's quite non-trivial. The challenging mix of light, motion, changing expressions, and limitations of cameras conspire against your wishes.

Many of you cool cats post very groovy pics of the extra-curricular debauchery; I'm happy to do what I can to get decent shots of the ribboned ones. And having practiced since TAM3, I've learned some tricks and techniques.

Thanks so much for the kind comments. And thanks, Articulett, for the heads-up on my Skepticality debut! What a huge thrill!

Those were great pictures! I just relived TAM all over again.

Those are some great shots. Thanks for sharing.

Photographer wannabes take note: Phyz took 2,000 shots and kept 10 percent. He's a good photographer- for the rest of us the percentage would likely be MUCH less. And note that he, "fussed and fiddled to make them presentable". My photography teacher back in the film days had two good maxims:
1. Film is cheap- take LOTS of photos.
2. Never let your bad photos see the light of day.

Much easier to do in this digital age.

Dang! Why do all of your hundreds of photos look better than any one of my TAM5 photos?!
You've got a picture of yourself with Summer Glau, thus you relinquish your right to complain about any photos anywhere.;)

Where do I sign up for Wowbagger's celeb shots courage course?

As someone who wasn't there - those are really good pics. There's even one of Randi smiling whch is rarer than unicorn's teeth.

Randi smiles and laughs quite a bit at TAM. He's a jolly, little, brilliant guy. He does get irritated when dealing with the woosters. Hey, that's a good term, "woosters." Is that out there or did I just make it up?

Anyway, if you snap 2000 frames, you increase your likelyhood of catching a RandiGrin on film.
