I don't need hugs, I want information.

I joined a support group looking for knowledge for one of my medical conditions. Crowd sourcing some prognosis among the members with the disease. But it seems anything besides "You Go Girl!!" type platitudes is seen as "misinformation".

I think I hear the impending Swoosh! of the ban hammer coming up to speed.

Small minded, micromanaging Admin.

That sounds like a crappy group. Maybe there's a different group out there that would suit you.

I picture an unrepentant victim of the banhammer's last words on parting as "rosebud, rosebud...." e.t.a. cabinetmaker's joke.

That support group sounds like my ex wife during her new agey self helpy mars and venus period (which she may or may not have outgrown, but divorce means never having to say "whatthehell" again), when the whole point of a problem is to talk about it, and the worst thing in the world to try to solve it. How dare you trivialize your problem by trying to cure it!

Anyway, I hope you can find a more useful group.

Any group on Facebook seems to fit that description, there are a lot of very sensitive souls out there.

I once pointed out the difference between "lose" and "loose" in a weight loss group and boy did that start a fire.

You didn't start it. It was always burning since the world's been turning.

WRT to the OP, that's how the phenomenon known as "toxic positivity" takes hold. You can only be superficially supportive. You can't deal with hard truths or offer any constructive criticism because that makes you a "hater". It infects a lot of social media...and pretty much anywhere people gather these days. LinkedIn is especially rife with it.

It's also how conspiracy cults like Q Anon and Gamergate attract new members who otherwise would never come near them.

Yeah dat.

And it holds even here, where many have labeled me a hater.

Somebody sent me a quote- We are so loaded with namby-pambies that we must water everything down. Including the truth.

(ever noticed the similarities between the two words 'label' and 'libel'? )

Ah, "loose" and "lose." The "Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms" of the Internet. You can't resist showing people the correct keys, even when you know they're wired to explode.

(For those who don't recognize the song title, Google "xylophone gag.")

It was the, "I've got 6 st to loose but I'm worried about lose skin", wot made me hit middle C.

Casebro, I'm seriously confused. You joined a Facebook group looking for serious medical information? A FACEBOOK GROUP?
Nothing on Facebook should be taken seriously. Even if it's your Mom saying she loves you.

“Toxic positivity…”that’s a term I’ve been searching for to fit into the way I see a lot of what happens on social media. Didn’t know it was a thing.

But yeah. People generally don’t want good information. They want validation of their bad information and support. I get the support side also but sometimes that support is grossly misplaced.

Hey. casebto! Just wanted to say, don’t let those Facebookers get you down, just find the tiger in you and summon the strength to carry on. You got this buddy!

Also, as mentioned Reddit groups are probably better although they will often have a lot of a-holes as well.

Wow, it's been over 12 years since Ehrenreich's Bright-sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking is Undermining America was published.

As you say, it's a longstanding and well-known issue. But still not easy to get around.

What I really miss is Forum format, rather than Blog Post format.

Ironically, this old method of communication seems way better suited for discussions with more than one side than any social media platform.

It also facilitates citing sources better than most other platforms. It is far from perfect, but it's better than most.
