Well, at least that seems to be the ultimate goal of the new social site that started today. According to the news articles I read their intention is not to get as much information as possible about you. They claim that you're the one that owns your uploaded and shared data - in contrast to the 2 big ones, and they claim they won't sell your bits'n'bites to third parties.

And taking down Facebook is the core of Unthink’s marketing campaign. In fact, the majority of Unthink’s message is about what it is not: it’s not another social network, it’s a social revolution. Unthinkers are not users, they’re owners. Unthink is not in control, you are. And so on. It even has its own manifesto, deeds and covenants. Source

Also, they want to replace Google, Twitter, Groupon, etc. :D

So what do you guys -uh- unthink about the idea, it's implementation and it's chances to survive in a long run.

I say good luck to them. I won't be holding my breath though, waiting for it to happen. With the number of people on Facebook, addicted to it, it seems, I don't think enough people will give a crap to make any real difference.
As far as it being a social revolution, too little too late. Facebook did that already.

I think thats the biggest point. People may have numerous complaints about facebook but it already revolutionized the whole idea and drew people in. I didn't even know about social networking sites existed until facebook... and now I can't even type this without firefox saying facebook is a proper noun, and word, and should be capitalized..

As soon as every media outlet started using facebook as their homepage and community relations it solidified it into a very strong site. Thats not an easy thing to break.
