Facebook conspiracies

So once again I have had people demanding I copy and paste their staus into facebook, because apparently FB is about to start charging. Not the end of the world if it happens, but is this a real conspiracy to crush down all us subscribers who have no choice but to suck it up (except for the obvious one: letting them delete your profile and going on google+ instead).

The post goes:
"IT IS OFFICIAL. IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS. FACEBOOK WILL START CHARGING DUE TO THE NEW PROFILE CHANGES. IF YOU COPY THIS ON YOUR WALL YOUR ICON WILL TURN BLUE AND FACEBOOK WILL BE FREE FOR YOU. PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON, IF NOT YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DELETED IF YOU DO NOT PAY"

So, some fact checking:
1) I have not found this "in the news" anywhere. If I have missed a big press release anywhere, and anybody has a link to a news item, feel free to share it. But more importantly nobody I got this message from ever knows where it was "in the news" either.
2) The facebook icons are already blue. And free.
3) Why on Earth would facebook allow you to go free for pasting a message? A retweet so to speak?
4) Why would facebook charge users anyway? This whole idea would cost them money. Lots of money. Facebook makes it's money through selling advertisment space. The companies who games you play on it for free get money from adverts. Adverts make lots of money. More money than charging customers. If you charge customers you lose some of them, the additional income you get from each customer does not outweigh the revenue lost by your advertising space depreciating in value. It is not a bad move, it is suicidal.

Honestly, there's nothing to see here.

I've recieved that very same post from friends who bought (for lack of a better term) into this sillyness before, a long time and many updates ago.

IF YOU COPY THIS ON YOUR WALL YOUR ICON WILL TURN BLUE AND FACEBOOK WILL BE FREE FOR YOU

Wow, it's like e-mail forwarded Glurge met Freeman on the Land in a dive bar and had an illegitimate child.....

This is a variation of the email tax myth that has been going around since I was knee high to a grass hopper. Any free service will always generate rumors of an eventual time in which the company will charge for their service. I remember it being directed to nearly every free service provider, and we have all seen "the government will tax email" spam mails in our inbox.

Generally the best reference for these types of things are snopes.com given that this is mug of their focus.

This "Facebook is going to start charging" thing goes around every time they announce an update. It's complete nonsense.

The amusing thing is that it must be predicated on the assumption that facebookers (facebookies?) would go ape if their beloved waste of time was suddenly made a subscriber service.

The correct response should be "meh"

Why do people still fall for this sort of crap?

Please copy & paste this to your status if you are constantly being asked to copy & paste something to your status by friends who copy & paste things to their status. Many people won't copy & paste this but my true sarcastic friends will copy & paste it because they know this was copied & pasted from a dear friend in need of more stuff to copy & paste...thank you! And don't forget the heart..♥

I just replied to a friend who put this (the OP thing) in her status, with: "Do you believe every bit of this crap, or do you just post it for a laugh?". She removed it soon after.

Done.

Thats good, but it needs slightly more emotional blackmail, about what percentage of friends will paste it, and that you know which friends they are...

This one's better:
On September 31st, 2011 Facebook will start charging you for your account. To avoid this, you MUST get NAKED, stand on your dining room table and do the Macarena, all the while singing ”I Will Survive”. After filming and posting it to your Facebook wall and YouTube, then, and only then, will Mark Zuckerberg come down your chimney to tell you that your account will stay free. Pass it on, it must be true because someone on Facebook I hardly know told me.

Snopes dot com is a good place to find the rebuttal to this misinformation!

Check it out here!

The naked dancing status just appeared on fb, copied and pasted as a friends status. Funny how these things spread.

This is actually one of the more entertaining variations on the semi-annual "Facebook is charging!" rumors, because I now have FB Friends claiming (in panic) that Snopes, too, has been hacked ("oh noes!!") , so of course there's no point in linking to anything from Snopes for their benefit.

My son just posted this on his status and changed his profile pic to go along with it. Dunno where he got it, but it's genius.
