Like how many politicians, businessmen, diplomats, civil-servants and such go golfing, sport-fishing or watching sports with influential big wigs. Even if they don't enjoy it themselves it still makes it more likely they are willing to do favors for them or if they some career opportunity available they might think of them.

I don't see that as odd at all. It's likely for health concerns related to VD.

As far as i've read it's about procuring prostitutes for someone else. For example, calling a callgirl/boy and paying them for sex is perfectly legal but if you did it for someone else it wasn't.

So if you hire a sexworker for a party, you are implicitly hiring him/her for other people, making you a pimp in France's legal system.

Apparently DSK was a rude jerk to some of these ladies. And I think that is wrong. He may even have overstepped consent on some occasions. That should be illegal in my book. (but impossible to prove after the fact etc etc yada yada)

But jailing someone on a technicality because he went to a sex party sounds way over the top to me.

Another thing that occurred to me, and is never mentioned: the sexual marketplace is not just an exchange between people of roughly the same physical attractiveness.
DSK is a high-status-male. These are likely to snag much younger and more attractive sexual partners than Joe Average. It may not have been that outlandish to him that women wanted sex with him at a swingers party.
