Ever heard of this argument?

After reading Warren's The Purpose Driven Life, I came across this bit on page 43:

"One day you will stand before God, and he will do an audit of your life...before you enter eternity."

Next paragraph.

"First, 'What did you do with my Son, Jesus Christ?' God won't ask you about your religious background or doctrinal views. The only thing that will matter is, did you accept what Jesus did for you and did you learn to love and trust him?"

Pardon? God isn't interested in your religious beliefs but he wants to know if you've accepted the core of Christianity? How can that NOT be a question about your religious beliefs?

Let me provide Warren with this hypothetical scenario of an Islamic apologetic:

"God doesn't care about your religion. His only request is that you accept Muhammad to be the Seal of the Prophets."

Granted that this line of reasoning isn't part of the mindset of most religious people (if it was, then we'd still be in the Dark Ages), did any of you ever encountered an absurd argument like the one above?

Looks like someone was getting their esoteric mysticism mixed up with their exoteric dogma.

More to the point - why are you reading The Purpose Driven Life?

A piece of garbage by a piece of garbage.

Life is far too short to waste it on junk like that.

"If two religions are in conflict, one must be wrong. But if one, why not both?" -- Carl Sagan

It's not expressed too well, but I think he's trying to say that it only matters to God that you have faith in Jesus, not your brand of [Xtian] faith.

Of course, how Rick Warren knows this is anybody's guess. Most people claiming to talk to God get locked up. Pastors... get a book deal. :halo:

This seems to limit the creator in his choices of criteria. For example it seems to arbitrarily condemn people making decisions based on ignorance to death. It ignores motives or sincerity. It seems also even to ignore a vile heart and evil actions as long as acceptance of Jesus or Mohamed is merely claimed. Not all Christians and Muslim's imagine their God as being so narrow minded.

Neither is such a view supported by scripture.

Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34)

Not read it: but there is a thing about "whatever you do to one of these you do to me" and another about " when you fed the hungry you fed me" (not direct quotes: can't be bothered to look them up and you know what I mean)

From what has been said here, and in light of those quotes, I think the man is a heretic and we should burn him ;)

You mean download him on to our PCs and make copies?

You have a talent for diverting discussions into irrelevant and dead-end passages.

There is no 'god', there was no 'creator'. To refer to 'the creator' is misleading, damaging to intellectual integrity, and damned insulting (to think that we'd fall for this sort of nonsense).

This reads like Radrook (who has, I think, put me on his ignore list) is saying 'yes' to the question asking " did any of you ever encountered an absurd argument like the one above"...

If so, then... ZOMG!!11!! I agree... with teh Radrook !!11!!

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Toast, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.
Matthew 12:32

Teh bibble is literally littered with absurd 'arguments'

Srsly :)

Is all this an exercise in demonstrating and justifying to yourself how you avoid dealing with the question
Who do you say Jesus Christ is?

Since JC snuffed it, (if indeed he existed) to the present day, I would imagine that billions of people have lived out their lives and died in complete ignorance of his existence.
Do you really suppose God would be questioning some Mongol or Australian Aborigine or South American Indian...."What about Jesus?"
"Who?"
