I downloaded Paltalk yesterday, and several minutes ago, when I went to use it, a 'Window Message' popped up saying I needed to install Errorsafe. I clicked 'no', but another message came up saying something along the lines that installing it was recommended. I clicked 'no' again, and it started going to the site to download it. I quickly restarted the computer, and have checked to see what 'Errorsafe' is, and it seems it's a virus.

I just thought I should warn people about using Paltalk.

I did have the Loose Change forum and here open at the same time, but I view those forums regularly and this has never happened before.

And I think I need to check my virus protection.

This sounds very similar to the problem I had here:

As well as the WinAntiVirusPro7 popups, I also got a few Errorsafe messages. Please let me know if your virus scan identifies it, because mine didn't and I'm thinking of switching.

Edit: You probably saw it already but check the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Errorsafe Be careful that a lot of so-called removal programs you'll find advertised on Google are actually clones of the software this adware/trojan is trying to download.

Windows Onecare quarantined the virus called Win32/Detnat.F

But Windows Onecare (which I'd just downloaded) now says it's expired (I'd had it before a while ago, and thought my husband had downloaded new antivirus software), although it seems to be running.

I'll try http://www.spywarewarrior.com/

Also, when I removed the Paltalk program, a tab popped up from "SurveyMonkey.com" saying "This survey is now closed". I'd never been to that site ever, so I think it's something to do with the spyware. Maybe it's stopped monitoring me?

I've just downloaded something else to replace Onecare. I'll see how that works.

Sounds like you lot have got hidden 'latent' spyware...

Paltalk deliberately downloading spyware...I don't think so.

Its more than they would dare do...

Think about it...Think about the uproar it would cause. It is NOT the PalTalk download...Read the EULA carefully and make sure to uncheck any boxes that ask if you wish to be included in, or if you want to download any 'extras'

In 10 years...I have never, ever encountered anything wrong with PalTalk, other than their own pop-ups...

Download

Spywareblaster
Spywareguard
Ad-Aware
Spybot-Search and Destroy

( All are freeware )

All but 'AdAware' pro-actively work in the background and 'immunize' your PC against drive-by spyware / malware / greyware...etc..etc..

Clean out your cache and cookies...

Thanks, D_B. Yes, it could be my fault. I okayed the ~'send usage reports' option in Paltalk.

I've downloaded Ad-aware already, done scans, and that's deleted lots of stuff, and nothing strange has happened since.

For your original question: Yes, Errorsafe is a virus. I really recommend getting a legal commercial antivirus program and a download of Spybot Search & Destroy. With Spybot S&D and my Norton Antivirus (take one of your liking) I have never had any problems.

Spybot 'Search and Destroy'

Spywareguard

SpyBlaster

Use 'Immunize' on everything...

Don't rely on Windows Firewall...( You should know whats going in and out of your PC )

Get a good Anti-Virus...The best free one is Grisoft AVG...

All of the above is 'freeware' and the top of the league...( better than some 'paid for' software )

And remember that every single site out there is trying to spy on you...or download spyware, malware...or hidden cookies and sites that contain links, tracking cookies that come from other 3rd party sites...planted on your PC from sites you trust..

Thanks very much, Warge and D_B.

I've downloaded Spybot S&D and it found things Ad-Aware didn't. I've also deleted all my cookies. I also went a bit mad and deleted all my passwords and now I can't remember my SC password! :o (I've sent emails to get it sorted, though.)

I'm going to try Grisoft AVG since the Windows firewall didn't block the virus.
