I move around a bit, and would like an email that is permanent, instead of having to send out change of email addy emails every time I move.

Something better than hotmail.

Maybe Manfred@Richthoffen.mail or .com or whatever.

Has anyone done this? I would assume that between canceling the old ISP and setting up the new one and telling them to use Richthoffen.mail the emails would just bounce.

Is there normally a cost from the ISP, above the 35 bucks or whatever a year that registering the name would cost?

Is it a pain in the ass?

If you want your own permanent domain name for your email address (and nothing more), there are many services that offer exactly that.

Here's just one of them.
http://registrar.godaddy.com/

$7.95/year for your domain name and $9.95/year for the basic email service using that name.

I have used this particular registrar in the past for my domain name and it was not a pain in the ass. :)

There are many others, so shop around.

You can go to www.mail.com and get an email address that will follow you around wherever you go. They have over 100 email domains to choose from, from things like usa.com and europe.com to doctor.com and techie.com.

(Note: I don't have anything to do with mail.com, and am not giving a personal recommendation, just passing along information.)

There's no reason that you have to use the email service from your ISP: indeed, I find it very useful to keep my email provider and internet connectivity provider distinct - it makes it much easier to switch between technologies, such as my recent move from DSL to cabls.

I have a couple of domains with register.com and they provide email service. Not the cheapest, but I've been with them a long time and they've been very reliable, so I have no reason to switch.
