Drinking milk and consuming alcohol

When I was younger, so much younger than today, I learned that drinking milk before consuming large amounts of alcohol (now, who would do *that*) the milk would help by blocking the alcohol getting into your blood. Apparently the fat in the milk blocked the alcohol or some such.

Is there anything scientific to this?

Eating food helps to absorb the alcohol. Milk is food.

I learned this in my TABC certification class. I don't know the science behind it.
 
You're not alone. My Grandpa was a hard working farmer. Really hard working. Occasionally he would go out with buddies with the intention of getting hammered. He would *always* drink a quart (no more, no less) of milk before getting his boot, scoot & boogy on. He claimed it prevented two things: a "never again night" hugging the porcelain goddess & an upset stomach the next morning. Like all farms, it's a seven days a week gig. Meaning, he could tie one on but, he still dragged his ass out of bed the next morning. Early.

I have no idea if there is any actual chemistry to his claim. Worked for him :)
 
An old favourite, eating food – and we mean a meal not crisps - or having a glass of milk before you start drinking lines your stomach and slows the amount of alcohol absorbed. This helps your digestive system cope with alcohol because there is less acetaldehyde for the body to deal with at any one time. Acetaldehyde is the toxic chemical that alcohol is converted to in the body and a prime cause of hangovers.

Fat slows the rate of absorption for many drugs. This may or may not have a relationship with why drunk always want the fattiest food they can find.

BUT:

1 part sugar
2 parts gin
4 parts milk

Makes a moloko. Cures what ails you, me drogies.
 
Doubtful, for one you can find as much claim that milk and alcohol is bad together, and furthermore what sort of reaction would that be ? Lipid with alcohol ? Estherification ? If you drink them mixed maybe , but separately by the time you drink alcohol your milk is way "ahead" in the tubes :D.

Yeah, i have had the worst experience in my life mixing milk and alcohol, so if we are rockin the anecdotal evidence at this point, count me for the "Doesn't work" side.

As a caffeine junky i tend to like mixing my energy drinks and alcohol (Do not do this unless you are damn near impervious to caffeine, and even if you do, don't go over 2 or 3 servings, do not mix one shot per energy drink, this would probably kill even me, after 8 or so drinks. ) this usually works rather well, for me at least, but one time my favorite Irish Blend monster was on sale ( Milk based energy drink.), so i decided, favorite energy drink, favorite liquor ( Jag), what could go wrong?

Never before, nor since had i vomited so much, and such an obvious half cheese substance, to this day it is referred to as Puke Mountain ( obviously since it has been cleaned.) .

My guess is anyone this has worked for has had several situations in which they did not eat nearly enough before drinking, and drank an amount that wouldn't have hassled them regardless, leading to confirmation bias that it worked.
 
For some reason I don't get hang overs. At the worst I wake up with dry mouth and feeling a little dazed. Well, actually at the very worst I got borderline alcohol poisoning, which led me to having flu like symptoms for a week. But there doesn't seem to be an in between, I either don't get a hang over or I almost die.

I actually wake up feeling better than normal after a night of fairly heavy drinking.
 
I don't get it. If you're drinking for the buzz, why in the world wold you do something specifically to inhibit the buzz?

Thats like smoking a joint but not inhaling - what kind of an idiot would do that?

I wouldn't quite look at it that way.

Drinking is about the buzz but it is also about keeping one's composure long enough to attain said buzz and not have a crappy time of it.

It would be like saying why do racecar drivers need brakes, isn't the goal to go fast? While the goal is to go fast, too much of a good thing is going to lead to tragedy.

Anything that gives you more of a buffer zone between good time and vomit is a good thing. But i do not believe that milk holds any property over any other substance that would make it a better preventing agent of the bad parts of being drunk, and can lead to some rather poor consequences stomach wise.

I guess. But, when I'm drinking my "brakes" are in my wrist, not my stomach.

I don't really like drinking but for on a blue moon,... I've had a few windows of heavy drinking for binges that last a few weeks, but it's usually out of the ordinary for me. It's been over a year since I last drank more than 1 beer, and only 2 beers in all in that time period.

I've not really seen a difference between eating and not eating, and 1 beer still gives me a slight buzz, and I am talking 3.2% Oklahoma beer, not the potent stuff the rest of the country gets.
 
Drinking milk then alcohol an hour or so later = good

Drinking milk + alcohol = really bad (as in Slivovitz + milk, it curdles...)
