From cnn.com video: Dr. Oz: I've never sold supplements
Description: "Dr. Mehmet Oz testifies on Capitol Hill about deceptive advertising for weight loss products."

From that video: Rene Marsh, CNN aviation and government regulation correspondent stated: Dr. Oz made these products very successful.
Fraudsters just take any simple mention of any product that he has on his show and they make it into an add claiming his support for the product.

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill knows that Dr. Oz, host of the daytime TV show, The Dr. Oz Show, is powerful, and mentions that with power comes responsibility. Senator McCaskill:
...you can either be part of the police here, or you can be part of the problem...

Seems like it went as well as could have been hoped. Disclaiming the ad pitches for specific products that sprouted from his sensationalist endorsements of some substances didn't take him off the hook as far as many of the senators were concerned.

A VERY simple formula...forget diets, forget expensive fads...If Kilocalories in are greater than Kilocalories burned off, you GET FAT.

From the Tautological School of the Obvious.

Controlling behaviors and thus caloric intake is not always so simple.

I cut down on my calories, not my kilocalories. It's a thousand times easier and the grams just fall off!

It is that simple to at least stop gaining weight. I cut many element of my eating, I am stable on weight (well sadly overweight) and not gaining anymore Kg. Eating raw carrot now for example instead of pizza.

Now to durably lose weight, I should keep my diet and do more sport, but sadly it is the part which is not that simple.

But I am pretty sure that barring a *few* rare case, it is something a lot of people could do. But don't out of lazyness.

Well, I'm fat because I have a glandular problem. It's with my salivary glands.

I am not impressed with the video. It appeared to be two people giving their opinions on the topic, rather than Dr Oz answering questions and giving factual information.

Edit. The video I am referring to is the YouTube one.

I used to have the same problem in front of a salami pizza :P.

but incredibly enough to my utter surprise I found out that my disgust at eating raw carrot (long story from my youth...) was over and i took a liking to it...

Dr. Oz is to medicine what Dan Brown is to literature: populist trashpile. (the Givem Wotheywunt School of Distraction and Homeopathic Homilies)...........

as someone fighting a life long battle with my weight, I so wish all these diet places were more interested in working out why you are eating, not what you are eating....in my pinion that's the main issue....

It would be simple if it was possible for a person to know exactly how many calories they burn in a day.

Dr. Oz not really 'grilled' by U.S. Senate

I agree. (U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill's) interaction with Dr. Oz pales in comparison to how U.S. Senator Carl Levin, grilled former Goldman Sachs Mortgages Department head Daniel Sparks.

The level of scrutiny between U.S. Senators is remarkably different. Note: the subjects and venues are different.
Dr. Oz testifies about diet scams on Capitol Hill

as compared to:
Sen. Levin Grills Goldman Sachs Exec...

I feel the TV/media/advertising industry allow a lot of immoral, unethical, and deceptive behaviors. One problem is, no matter how despicable the immoral and unethical behavior may be, some or all of it might not be illegal. Many get away with the continued ripping off of the consuming public. And in some instances, even if something illegal did take place, people are often not held accountable for their deceptive, wicked, and illegal behavior.

The problem with dieting is that people give up things they enjoy, lose weight quickly, get frustrated, begin eating them again, and re-gain the weight. Its less healthy to lose, gain, lose the weight than to stay overweight. Eat what you want, in smaller portions. Diets don't work, lifestyle changes do.

I did it, so anyone can do it. It's all about character. I don't know if I have more than usual, or all the people who can't lose weight have less than necessary, but there you go. 'Character' may not be the right word, it may be 'willpower,' or 'resolve,' or 'determination,' or 'faith.' Whatever the word, it seems I have more of it than many.

It's very much like why poor folk stay poor, addicted folk stay addicted, dumb folk stay dumb, sheeple stay sheeple, etc... Character.

/sarcasm

Why isn't this thread in the Social Issues & Current Events forum?

Good question. I started this thread because it dealt with diet scam issues I felt might belong in Science, Mathematics, Medicine, and Technology section. The issues are multifaceted, and cover a wide range of subject matter.

I defer to you and/or the JREF Forum Moderators to locate this thread for where you/they feel is most appropriate.
