Sadly, when I clicked on the site, I saw photographs of 2 of the students I teach!

I'm going to have to deprogram them. Oddly enough, one of the children I know is NOT a believer, but has a mom that is over the top woo. He has spoken in class about how his dad actually sneaks him to a REAL doctor when he is ill, as mom will try almost anything except moderm medicine. He and dad have a "deal" going where they don't talk about it. Oddly enough, they ALWAYS talk about it at school.

We put a note in his folder, just in case in the future dad has any trouble.

It's really sad when parents force their "beliefs" on their children, especially when it concerns their health.

I just picture that poor kid having one heck of a fun summer at that doubledog camps. It will be interesting to hear about it in the Fall.

NO!

Anyway I was checking out Kittens grad school digs. I had to make sure she wasn't working too hard or anything...right....

Let's just say she has earned such a nice summer as she is having. She isn't missing mommy at all!!!

I have parents in Brattleboro and a brother in Bennington. I sent them the link to the Doubledog camp and my brother said it best:"it used to be there were more cows than people in Vermont, now there's more woos".

well, I wish everyone would email them and point out that you think their camp is crap. It's all touchy feel good, but honestly, it's dangerous also.

Sadly, when I read the biography of one of the camp founders, she seems to be a graduate of Dartmouth, my alma mater. Oh, the horror!

These people don't deserve any share of charitable dollars.

Their disclaimer about contributions on their Donations page is as follows:

"We gratefully accept any monetary or in-kind donations to the Double Dog Center. As a non-profit corporation seeking 501(c)(3) status, you can make a donation to the Double Dog Center and count it as a charitable contribution on your 2006 Income Tax return. You will be sent a letter, which will act a receipt for your donation. We will also heartily thank you for supporting our growing organization."

I suspect that this disclaimer may not be enough, although I could be wrong.

My understanding is that if a person were to donate to them while they are awaiting IRS approval, and they then deducted it on their federal income taxes, there would be an issue if the IRS denied nonprofit status to them. The person making the donation would have to amend their income tax return if that were to occurr, therefore, I believe they need to say more in their disclaimer. They need to add a line about the deduction being valid as long as they end up getting nonprofit status.

Perhaps someone may want to ask the IRS about this. I tried to call that line twice, but they close too early in the day for me to get to them.

KittyNH, would you be able to call the IRS and check? I'd drop the name of the "org" if it was me. The line closes at 330pm EST, I believe. 877-829-5500 is the toll-free number.

We don't need any more junk charities.

I saw their response in the Commentary. Utterly sad and pathetic. Just because one is educated doesn't make one smart.

I sent off a link to the Brattleboro Reformer (the local newspaper). I told them I thought they should do an article, but they probably won't want to piss off their average reader. The alternative health ads probably pay a few salaries. You are rather held hostage in Brattleboro by your educated woos.

To be honest I have little sympathy for the educated woo. Your average Benny Hinn audience member, sure...but someone in highly educated Vermont, I don't think so. Plus, I can tell you that a lot of these people are just in it for the money. They go to a real doctor when needed. But peddling woo is so easy! I know someone that does Reiki on the terminally ill (the local hospice PAYS her salary). I stopped donating to hospice. She charges $100 a visit. A VISIT!!! She doesn't cure them, she does pain relief and mental calming. She lives in a big house, and drives a very nice car. I work a real job and honestly, I can live with my small house and rusty Subaru.
