Has anyone got this on video? It seems like a seminal moment in Aussie TV...:D
 
I bet it's at my festival video shop for rent... although I doubt they'd show that particular shameful ep. I remember seeing it on some sort of 'embarrassing moments on television by famous people that we're certain they really didn't want to have shown' and it displayed Randi being quite polite about it all as Lane just went berserk.
 
Randi is definitely on that disc. Don Lane doesn't get to decide for himself what's "best" and apparently that episode is what everyone wants to see. I swear I saw an index to the disc online yesterday, but now I can't find it. Anyhow, the IMDB entry lists Randi.

I remember seeing it live! Poor old Don was probably more pissed off that he thought he had Randi on toast by springing the "surprise" key-bending request on him, then Randi turned the tables in public and made him look a goof.

Incidentally, I understood that Don was (and still is?) a firm believer in the spirit-talking rubbish of Doris Stokes and her ilk. My impression was that he thought she was "very gifted" and "a wonderful person". Another reason for him to blow up - his own ardent beliefs and idols were being glaringly exposed as frauds on live prime-time TV.

My opinion of Don Lane as a mediocre TV celeb took a sharp nose-dive even further at that point. It was also when I was beginning to realise that some people on TV actually used the method of cynically and deliberately creating controversy solely to bolster their own flagging Neilson ratings (I was so naive back then!).
 
I vaguely remember Don's tantrum. We used to watch him all the time. I was convinced that it involved Doris Stokes, not Uri Geller. I spoke to some friends and they also thought it was about Stokes.
Maybe there were two?

Yes, the lanky yank used to get quite stroppy at times!
I saw the clip recently on some worst-of show.
I think it was Stokes that was the main focus, with the spoons as an extra prop.
I'm pretty sure you will uncover the straight dope on it if you search in this forum.

I was also saw it, which is unusual as I despised the show, (yet I would watch Hawii 5 0, go figga). I loved it, Don Lane came off worse, as he was such an idiot. Hence, when I heard there was a JREF, I knew I was on a winner.

Yep, I'm that old. :eek: It was the first time I saw Randi live too.

Re the lanky yank, makes you wonder why Bert Newton, who I don't find particularly entertaining myself but I admit he is intelligent, suffered playing second banana to him for so long.
 
I saw that episode live, too. I'm sure when Don lost it it was because of Randi's comments about Doris Stokes. I remember his tirade being something along the lines of "I happen to think Doris Stokes is a sweet little old lady and you can just p*** off ..."

Slight tangent - some years later I was watching Bert Newton host the Logies. Lou Ferigno was a guest presenter and he seemed to be having a little trouble opening the envelope. Bert stepped in and helped him saying, "Don't worry, I'm used to working with weak Yanks." :D
