Dolphins Protect New Zealand Swimmers from Shark
WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A pod of dolphins circled protectively round a group of New Zealand swimmers to fend off an attack by a great white shark, media reported on Tuesday.

Lifesavers Rob Howes, his 15-year-old daughter Niccy, Karina Cooper and Helen Slade were swimming 300 feet off Ocean Beach near Whangarei on New Zealand's North Island when the dolphins herded them -- apparently to protect them from a shark.

"They started to herd us up, they pushed all four of us together by doing tight circles around us," Howes told the New Zealand Press Association (NZPA).

Howes tried to drift away from the group, but two of the bigger dolphins herded him back just as he spotted a nine-foot great white shark swimming toward the group.

The lifesavers spent the next 40 minutes surrounded by the dolphins before they could safely swim back to shore.
Dolphins can see visually and with their sonar that humans are not dolphins, yet these wild dolphins protected the swimmers anyways. That's pretty neat stuff.

From the same story:
The incident happened on October 30, but the lifesavers kept the story to themselves until now.
Why? Does anyone smell something funny about this story?

Dang. When the Bengals are having a better season than you, it might well be time to consider converting to a minor league franchise. :p

(But what do I care? The Stillers are doing some major smiting this season.)

Funny you should mention. This very sentence led to a discussion of crop circles and alien abductions here at the homefront.

I share your sorrow rik...big time dolphins fan here, they are soooo pitiful to watch this year.

After a quick Google search I found this type of thing happens. So I prefer to be less skeptical about dolphins protecting swimmers than a conspiracy plot by some teenagers to lie to the press. Call me an crazy.;)

Maybe it took them three weeks to clean all the fecal matter out of their suits.

All dolphins are not equally yoked. When americans think of dolphins they think of atlantic bottlenose dolphins.

I am not sure what species of dolphins was involved since this was south pacific.

What I do know is that dolphins are found in the stomachs of great white sharks and tiger sharks contrary to the popular american belief that dolphins somehow punk out 18 foot sharks.

Mind you, there was much room for observation error here:
A. the "herding" could have been a misunderstanding
B. there is no positive ID on the great white shark

Nothing like science, eh? ;)
Ok, I take it all back...the scientific evidence is overwhelming that dolphins are mass murderers and teenagers plot conspiracy theories to make dolphins look intelligent. For my next trick I will post about cannibalistic nazi- deathcamp baby killers, perhaps they will be better recieved than a few dolphins from New Zealand... ;)
