This week Dogma Free America interviews Brian Dunning of the Skeptoid podcast and Skeptoid.com,where we discuss moving rocks in death valley, cell phones on airplanes, reflexology, engergy, and more. Also news of ghost brides in China, preaching of Jihad in Australia, and an upcoming vote on abortion in Portugal.

You can listen via Itunes or at dogmafreeamerica.com

On the podcast I did not get a chance to finish my thought about the Mormon tradition that's not too dissimilar from the Chinese practice of providing a "conveniently deceased" bride for a dead young single man to bury with him.

The practice I speak of is "baptisms for the dead". The reason Mormons are so big on geneaology research is that they are trying to baptise all the dead people - by proxy. Regular Joes show up in the baptism gown and get dunked numerous times, each baptism being a proxy for a previously deceased person who did not get the chance while alive.

Come to think of it, I vaguely remember a reference to proxy "temple" weddings of deceased couples who were married somewhere other than a Mormon temple. Can any Formons confirm this?

BTW Guys, you two have excellent podcasts. Ok, they're no "Beer Report", but they're good, nonetheless.;)

I liked this episode. I just have one question, was it because of your mutual involvement here that inspired it?

No, we'd never met, we were both already doing our podcasts independently when he emailed me about doing the interview.

Brian,
I too enjoy both your Skeptoid podcast and Rich's Dogma Free America, so I enjoyed this particular episode doubly.
Thanks for completing your thought about the Mormon tradition here. When the podcast ended without that, I thought I'd have to e-mail one of you to get the info--but now I don't have to.

Mormon Baptism for the dead

You have convinced me that I should do a follow-up on the whole Mormon baptism for the dead-dead weddings stuff. I will try to put it in Episode 10 or 11.

I've not heard of "sealings" or marriage between the dead, but I do know that Mormons are supposed to baptise everyone in their lineage back to Adam and Eve.

Also, don't forget the time they baptised all the holocaust victims in to the LDS faith. That didn't go over too well with the families of those who died at least partially because of their own religion, so the church undid it.

Where can I get unbaptised? Damn preist sprinkled water on me 40 years ago.
