Does fiber protect against bowel cancer?

I've heard pro and con arguments on this issue. Does anyone know:

1. Where the link between fiber intake and bowel cancer came from?
2. Is that link robust or not?

It certainly protects against diverticulosis.

It doesn't exactly quantify the extent to which fiber and bowel cancer are (inversely) related nor suggest a mechanism. Any more?
