A 75-year-old man stored his wife's body for nearly six years in his backyard, twisted and upside down in an old freezer, because he hoped she could someday be brought back to life, authorities said.
...
Authorities found Marcia Lynn Rowlette's body packed in dry ice and insulation and stored along with the bodies of 10 dead cats. Rowlette told police he used the cats for research.

Rowlette was arrested last week on a felony charge of crimes against the dead.
...
Alcor Life Extension Foundation president Jerry Lemler also noted that cryonics is generally performed with liquid nitrogen, not dry ice, because liquid nitrogen is colder.

"I hate to be the one to burst the bubble on this man's dream," Lemler said. "He had a dream that we share here at Alcor. But I don't think his methodology was very thought out."
Kids, don't try this at home.

About two weeks ago at work, I saw a guy out on the dock filling up a 5 gallon? sized dewar with liquid nitrogen. A few minutes later he puts the (loose fitting) cap on the dewar, sets it in the front passenger footwell of his car and drives off.

Potential Darwin Award candidate?

edited to add: yes, his car windows were all rolled up.

Not quite that bad. Cars are leaky enough that I don't think he could suffocate from the ordinary boiloff from the dewar. If it fell over, he'd still have plenty of time to roll down a window before he got in trouble.

I used to drive from L.A. to the Bay Area (~ 7 hour drive) with a nitrogen-filled DeWar in my car. Once it's chilled, the evaporation isn't that great, and this was in a nice squarish plastic shipping container that packed well and wouldn't spill. The surfboard on the roof was probably a greater hazard.

The cap has to be loose-fitting.

Crimes against the dead...?

Okaaay... considering that THEY ARE FRIGGIN' dead...

Hell if I die I don't give a damn if you mangle my corpse or not. I'm dead, dammit! It doesn't affect me!

Zig,

Yeah, you're probably right. I suppose I was just thinking of the worst possible scenario, you know, like the dewar spills and the guy reaches over to upright it and sticks his head in the nitrogen. Sorry, but my mind tends to imagine the worst situation.

AP,

If you have a system to keep it from spilling, and allow for the boil off to ventilate, it's not particularly hazardous.

And I know the cap has to be loose fitting........otherwise very bad things happen.

Can you prove you were dead before you were mangled ?
Thank you for putting a smile on my face... that was just total craziness...
