Discovery Channel "Documentary" is Shameful

So. There's no good way to start this thread, forgive my poor grammar. I'm still sputteringly angry at Discovery.

For those who missed it--lucky you--last night Discovery started their annual Shark Week by putting on a 'documentary' about the search for a living modern Carcharodon megalodon. You know, the thing that had teeth like a great white shark's only the length of your hand? Probably was 60+ feet long, and we've found whale fossils with shear marks from their teeth...

Well, Discovery used fake scientists, fake videos, scripted 'events' and digital editing to create a supposed scientific investigation into a giant shark that sank a fishing vessel... It was like a Syfy Original Movie, only it was being promoted as fact.

I think we--the thinking public--need to actually take a stand here. I think that some big guns need to come out and publically shame the network. Phil Plait, you listening? Neil DeGrasse Tyson? Heads of departments in Marine Biology, Paleontology at colleges and universities? We need you to step up.

I can, and have, posted and will email (their Viewer Relations Site would not load on any of the 3 times I tried) to Discovery Channel to indicate that this is abandoning the science and engineering focus that got them their audience.

Frankly, I hope that the Mythbusters #1 requested myth is that they bust this 'documentary' as the farce it was. I wish their contracts would let them speak up and issue some public calls for a retraction and apology.

Those are my thoughts. What do the rest of you think?

Disappointed and angry, Miss_Kitt

PS This is in Current Events instead of the TV section because I think this is larger than the Members Only area.

I watched it, and I didn't portray it as them stating it as fact, but maybe I missed something.

Discover Channel is a for profit business. Crap like that draws viewers. End of story.

So is the SyFy channel, but at least they don't try to pass things off as documentaries.

Sharknado wasn't a documentary?

The Discovery channel has put out a lot of crap over the years.

The only really honest source for science seems to be NOVA.

It was an absolutely shameful show. I agree with you. The few disclaimers at the end about it being fake definitely don't make up for it. To skeptics such as us, the fake was obvious. But there is a large percentage of the public who cannot tell the difference, which is why all of these fake shows actually get ratings, such as Operation Repo, Lizard Lick Towing, Storage Wars, Auction Kings, Airplane Repo, River Monsters, Amish Mafia, Cheaters, etc etc.

Discovery Channel had made a reputation for producing non fiction documentaries, which makes this Mockumentary even more believable to much of the ignorant viewers. For shame, Discovery Channel, for shame.

Nonsense portrayed as fact is rampant on these channels that originally were conceived to inform the public of fact. It's like they saw the success of Fox News and reproduced their model.

Anyway, I watched a lot of it last night and never got the impression it was ever anything but "what if this was real?"

But I missed the beginning.

That seems to be the important point.

It's similar to false advertising or a classic bait and switch.

In real life I don't mind if a liar lies, at least they are consistent and you can peg them for what they are! But if someone who has been known for telling the truth lies it is just plain evil...

Evil how? By making fun of the mentally incompetent?

I just watched the trailer, and it's obvious it's fiction. I mean, if the events in the show had really happened it would have made the news and everything.

I had it on as background (it finished a repeat an hour ago) and the main believer guy was constantly decribing their hunt/trap setting for a Megaladon as though it was a given that it exists.

Full on believer... way too Bigfootish/Para Investigator.

Reminds me of the panic when people thought the broadcast War of the Worlds was real. Or the Blair Witch Project.

Regarding the "documentary" I only have to say that, just as I thought that the Discovery Channel couldn't sink any lower... Now they just need to pair up with the History Channel to make a 'Giant Nazi Sharks from Outer Space put Hitler in power' "documentary".
