We all know John Edward is cold reading with his, 'jack john jim james' outbursts, but why is it that people like Colin Fry seem to provide more accurate readings, what differences in cold reading are used? Id be interested in learning cold reading, in the same way I'd like to learn a magic trick...

I started some preliminary exploratory stuff on this idea a while back. Check out http://www.statisticool.com/aura.htm

Scroll down to the 'PERCENTAGE OF 'DO YOU UNDERSTAND?' TYPE OF QUESTIONS, 'REMEMBER THIS.' TYPE OF STATEMENTS, TOTAL QUESTIONS ASKED, AND LETTERS SAID FOR READERS COMPARED WITH EACH OTHER' graph and you can kind of get an idea how some readers differ on some basic items.

Judging from the data, is this a fair statement?

"There is no evidence that cold readers can do what mediums do."

Colin Fry goes less on names and more on situations/items.
"Why is he showing me a jar of jam..?" Type thing.
He often says "they're not giving me a name right now" ,no but they can witter on about jam though Colin,eh?

Ian Rowland's book is expensive, but it's worth it!!

It is, but it most certainly is.

If you want to talk about cold reading and want to come across as someone who knows what he's talking about, but haven't read the book...

....shut the **** up.

Uhm, have you seen Colin Fry live? I have. I recorded a séance and must conclude that "accurate readings" don't apply to him.

I just bought a book from ebay called 'Confessions of a Celebrity Psychic: How to Become Rich and Famous as a Fraudalent Psychic Entertainer and Consultant' the synopsis goes as follows:
'If you’ve ever seen psychics like Derek Acorah, Colin Fry or John Edwards on TV and wondered ‘How do they do that?’ then wonder no more as this book "Confessions Of A Celebrity Psychic" exposes the truth and teaches you real world "Cold Reading" techniques, which will make you look like a truly genuine Clairvoyant!'... Anyone know anything about this book?

Watching John Edward for example,I do not know how he gets away with the blatant fishing! Are the people who go on Crossing Over really that stupid?

They want to believe. They need to believe.

We've had a hardcore believer here, who admitted that one of the psychics she believed to be real was cheating. Yet, she still believed in him.

Better to just post it in this thread:

Remie, do you have transcripts from those professional cold readers from a live setting that can be verified?

Here's one of Banachek:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1UJrEzy4UU

Another guy I didn't list:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_UDaahAd5o

Not one of my listed people, but impressive all the same.

Another:

And another, kinda like John Edward:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU76PkctdT8

More, and this one says he's not a psychic and doesn't speak to the dead:

I also recommend this book: http://themarkedward.com/top.html

And this one:

As to "verifying" them... I'm not sure what you mean. They can be verified as much as Sylvia Browne or John Edward or anyone else can.

Also a line from the Wikipedia definition of "mentalist":

The stage mentalist ostensibly mimics these supernatural behaviours by natural means.

Readings from professional readers, from live settings, that I can get an entire transcript from, and the videotape from.
