Read in the local rag today that the Italian Government believes that the Soviet Union was behind the attempt of John Paul's life.

I guess the Pontiff's political leanings were considered a threat by the Soviet Military.

Any truth to it?

Considering the great deal of influence the JPII had in Poland and other Soviet Block countries with Catholic populations, I think that there is a good chance the USSR wouldn't have minded the pope dead.

Well, it was all in the past, and, to be honest, didn't we all try to kill the pope a couple of times? It's just a natural part of growing up. Let's chalk it up to experience, and treasure the valuable lessons we learned this episode.

Have you not yet noticed that the Italian government is run by a complete lunatic? Berlusconi's so ****ing crazy that one minute he calls himself "Jesus Christ of politics" and the next he's complaining that he's been "gagged" because Italian law requires his TV stations to give equal airtime to other candidates.

The guy's a nut.

So if the Italian government under this clown thinks the USSR was behind the Pope's assassination, I take it with a huge grain of salt.

Why is this news now? I can remember reading about KGB ties to the Pope's shooting well over 20 years ago. I thought this was a dead story, filed under the same category as "Japan Surrenders"...

That's what I recall as well.

Something about mistaking him for Robbie Coltrane...
