Detoxing

Unfortunately it's a classic snake oil sale.

People think they're doing better because they've got Detox kit, proper rest\sleep and plenty of water.
Guess which one they could knock out and have it just as effective
Guess which one the punter attributes their success to...

It was in most of the papers this morning too, at least the ones I read while waiting for 3hrs for my plane (Mail, Independent, Times, Telegraph).

Of course I'm sure that "Dr" Gillian McKeith will have other ideas. Apparently she or her friend can give accurate diagnoses just by looking at the scum on your tongue.

Even Mrs. Don isn't immune to this detox nonsense. I'm all for giving the beer and tabs a rest for a few weeks early in the year but avoiding my other drugs of choice (including caffeine and lard) just seems risky.

So if you do no drugs at all, but don't brush your tongue for a week, you will register as VERY drug-addicted! Or something like that.

Seeing as every known substance is toxic, depending on the amount and concentration, then it must stand that whatever they put in the detox pills is itself toxic. Water is about the least toxic substance to humans so if you really want to "detox" then just drinking that would be the best bet. But of course you would quickly develop nutrient deficiencies.

Re: water - this whole "drink X litres a day" mantra that has become Law to 99% of the population does my head in! People keep telling me I must drink gallons of PURE water. Apparantly juice, squash, tea, milk, watery food etc doesn't count. I ask them: what if I get a gallon of spring water and add one drop of juice? Is it no good now? And what if I drink it pure but have consumed a glass of milk just before - what happens when it mixes in my stomach? They tend to have no answer other than that I must down endless glasses of water or be dehydrated because.....the body is 80% water and therefore drinking is important. Very annoying.

Depends what fluid you are drinking. Beer is about 99%(by mass) water and drinking 5 pints will cure your thirst, but as your body attempts to get rid of the alcohol you use up more water and become dehydrated. A similar effect happens when you drink lots of coffee, apart from the getting drunk part! If you drank lots of sugar loaded squash then you wont dehydrate, but your teeth will probably fall out and you'll get fat from the overdose of sugar.

Its not so much the amount of water you should be drinking, its what is in the solution that you shouldn't be drinking that causes the problems. Remember, the first sign of dehydration is thirst which prompts us to rehydrate.

Gillian McKeith's life style is heathly and she's right about many of the things she preachs, however, I have seem some episodes of her show where she has claimed that parts of the tongue map to other parts of the body, this set my ********-o-meter to full deflection!

According to some article I read, coffee doesn't dehydrate you. Well not if you drink it regularly. Apparantly the body compensates and the diuretic effect is much lessened by daily intake to the point where it does hydrate more than dehydrate. The same is supposedly true for weak beer too.

The same article also stated that drinking endless pints of water actually dehydrates you. Apparantly if you keep over hydrating, your kidneys go into expulsion mode and getting out of this takes a few hours. So when you stop drinking when you go to bed you end up waking up more dehydrated than if you'd just drank normal amounts.

Ill believe that one when she shows me how eating dark green leaves can "oxygenate the blood", Gillian McKieth is another of the health woos, who isn't content with saying "eat a bland diet, get some exercise", she has to dress it up with pseudoscientific crap, and often comes out with statements which are flat out wrong. Remember this woman also believes in food colour therapy, or whatever the ting is which says that purple foods will cure cancer (its to do with QM you know!) any relationship between the rubbish spouted by Mckeith and reality is entirely co-incidental. (I've got a lovely little anecdote about one of my cow-orkers, who bought the good "Drs" book, rigorously followed the advice on how to loose weight and put on two stone! Of course anecdotes are not data, but still. )The problem is, everybody tends to know what is and is not good for them, but there's no market in giving common sense advice, so we get health frauds galore on our screens, selling quick fixes to people who don’t want to own up to the reality of "eat less, do more".Oh and just what is that woman's obsession with poo about?

Gillian McKeith's tongue test

Can your tongue really your reflect your health?

McKeith believes it can. Take her simple test ...

1. Does your tongue have a line down the middle?
2. Does your tongue have teeth marks round the side?
3. Does your tongue have a bright red tip?
4. Is your tongue sore?
5. Does your tongue appear dotted all over?

If you answer yes to a question, it could mean:

1. Weak digestion. You may feel bloated and suffer from gas and indigestion. A strong digestive system is important for nutrient absorption. I would suggest food combining for a eight weeks. Keep meals simple, and eat ingredients that are particularly good for you - brown rice, avocado and tofu.
2. Spleen weakness and nutrient deficiencies. Your spleen is your energy battery and may not be taking up nutrients as effectively as it should. Symptoms can include feeling tired all the time, gassy and bloated.
3. Emotional upset or bodily stress. Either way, you will need B vitamins to calm it all down.
4. Vitamin B6 deficiency, and low niacin and/or iron levels. Drink nettle or dandelion teas and eat foods rich in vitamin B6, including sunflower seeds, brown rice, buckwheat and avocados.
5. Liver stagnation. In western holistic medicine, we think of the liver as the organ of detoxification. When it is overworked, it may perform sluggishly. Foods that support the liver include kohlrabi, broccoli, cauliflower, flax seeds, hemp seeds and sunflower seeds. Nettle and dandelion teas can help, too.
