Are these names even reflective of the principles of said parties today? When was the last time a "democrat" advocated a policy that would increase the people's role in the government? When was the last time a "republican" advocated a policy that would reflect the party's namesake?

The way I see it, it's like the Judean People's Front and the People's Front of Judea. They both derived their name from the Democratic-Republicans of Jefferson's day.
