Dell Printer Problem

I was recently given a Dell Model 922 printer, and am finding it to be the most infuriatingly inconvenient device I have ever owned. The problem I'm currently facing is that the gift included a black ink cartridge, but no color cartridge. One would think that this wouldn't be a problem for printing documents in black ink, which is all I want to do, but whenever I try to do so I get an error message pointing out that there is no color cartridge installed, and it doesn't print. There is a box to check in the software setup to "Print color images in black," but for reasons I can't fathom, the box is grayed out and I can't check it.

After trying in vain to make it work for a little while, I broke down and walked to the local office supply store, intending to buy a color cartridge that I don't really need, only to be told that I can apparently buy Dell cartridges only through their website. Do I really need to spend 30 bucks plus shipping on a color cartridge, and wait several days for it to arrive, or is there some other way to make the printer just print in black?
