WASHINGTON - Rep.Tom DeLay, the defiant face of a conservative revolution in Congress, stepped down as House majority leader on Saturday under pressure from Republicans staggered by an election-year corruption scandal.

"During my time in Congress, I have always acted in an ethical manner within the rules of our body and the laws of our land," the Texas lawmaker told fellow Republicans in a letter informing them of his decision.

The hilarious part is he just acted in an unethical manner when he claimed he acted in an ethical manner....(by lying that he always acted in an ethical manner).:D

It's sometimes hard to believe the ballz of these guys - they're lying while they tell us they're not lying! And thank you too for lending credence to my theory that you're not a rabid neo-con as some may think - most rabid neo-cons would never possess the capability of laughing at themselves.

Yeah, I remember that - it was as distasteful as almost anything he's done. Joking about finding WMD in the White House while soldiers HE SENT to find WMD in Iraq are dying violent death.

I don't think it was so much a sense of humor that spurred Dubya on so much as it was his inner child laughing at the untruth he used to sell Americans the war.

Yep...it's time for crooked church-boy to face the music! The Republicans do seem to know enough to toss the guy overboard when he becomes a liability and drag on the party. Too bad the Dems can't find a way to similarly lose Howard Dean before he costs them big. Sadly HD is merely loony; not criminal.

Luckily for the rest of us DeLay's legal problems might just equal a lessening of the fundy x-tian influence on Capitol Hill. Frist; the other born twice-or-thrice; x-tian loony seems to have looming problems of his own. (Abramoff) It looks to me that the "Moral Majority" is strangely susceptible to temptation. ;)

Ironically (or perhaps alanically), this may be the worst thing that could happen to the Democrats. While there are still plenty of good examples of the "culture of corruption" to flail against, it helps a lot to have a really big target like DeLay in the public eye. Because he now no longer has as much power (though he still has plenty), it may be that the further records of his transgressions will be relegated to the back of the news.

Americans have such a case of ADD that unless he is publicly and perpetually pilloried, it will be mostly forgotten come November. I feel sure that this is the reason for the timing of this decision by the Repubs to force him out.

Now DeLay gets to act all noble about how he "stepped down to save the nation", entailing the inevitable contrasts with Clinton. Few Americans pay enough attention to the news to know how much of a lie that is and that he was ousted by his own party.

Still I cannot suppress a small giggle.

I think the thing will sink the Dems in '08 is that they are still stuck in the rut of criticism and obstructionism and will be no closer to a viable plan of action than they were in '04.

Not sure but I'm not impressed with Pelosi's constant refrain of "culture of corruption". I don't think the American people are buying that this administration is any worse than any other as far as scandal goes. If Dem's really believe that the American people are going to be swayed by the purity of Democrats then I'm afraid they are in for a big disappointment. I'm not a partisan so I honestly don't mind if the Dem's win and I think they could do a better job. I would like to see fiscal responsibility. I liked the years of Bill Clinton. I'm not certain how much he should be credited for prosperity but he certainly didn't hurt. Offer a plan to get us back on track financially. Stop the deficits.

Democrats, want to win? Paint a clear picture of what you are FOR and not that you are against the corruption of the Republicans. {snore} That will go over like a lead balloon because Americans know that to change political parties is to just replace one group of potential criminals with another.
 
CSPAN had special coverage of some the charges brought against Jack Abramoff this weekend. I checked CNN once or twice to see if congressmen were jumping out of windows yet.

They had some quotes from some of the e-mails. One described using the Christian right's mass e-mailing ability as "bringing in the wackos". (paraphrased)

Yeah this is gonna be good.

9 elected democrats arrested so far in Tennessee. I would hope they would drop the culture of corruption thing before someone tallies the numbers.

Are you telling me that what wins elections is clearly stating your own positions rather than mudslinging against the opposition? If so, I have some land I want to sell you.
