I guess we have to give this a little more time for confirmation of Felt's story, but all of the pieces, all of the little bits of the mystery man's profile revealed to us over the years by Woodward and Bernstein, seem to fit. He is also extremely old—aged 91—and, from what I've heard, terminally ill, just as Woodward, Bernstein, and Bradlee had described Deep Throat several months ago.

As a former watergate junky, wow. A confirmation from Woodward or Bernstein will seal the deal.

This is what I am waiting for as well. If the revelation is valid, the confirmation should be coming within a matter of hours.

Not sure if we're going to get it:

Carl Bernstein, who with Bob Woodward broke the story as Washington Post reporters, issued a statement neither denying nor confirming Felt's claim. Bernstein stated he and Woodward would be keeping their pledge to reveal the source only once that person dies.

Felt is 91. Woodward & Bernstein say they won't reveal the identity of Deep Throat until that person dies.

Any way you slice it, whether Felt is Deep Throat or not should be rather obvious in the not-too-distant future.

For a few hours, word from the Post was "no comment." Which makes sense.

It would not be unreasonable for Woodward, Bernstein and Bradlee to confirm that Felt had "outed himself," as opposed to being identified by someone else. There had been several previous reports in which news sources reported the identity of the famous deep background source, with the hope that Woodward, Bernstein and Bradlee would confirm (because the "cat was out of the bag") or deny. But they remained silent. (They did, however, confirm that Al Haig, who was running for the presidency was not the source, and did so at Haig's urgent request.)

In television interviews, each of Woodward, Bernstein and Bradlee acknowledged that they knew the identity of the mysterious source, and that if his identity were to be disclosed within his lifetime, it would have to be his choice.

Felt was the #2 man at the FBI during the Watergate years. This is interesting in that it means that the FBI was investigating the case, before the press blew it open. But did the FBI (as opposed to Felt doing it on his own) intentionally inform the press so that the press could do it's dirty work, thus sparing the FBI from arresting a sitting POTUS during the height of the cold war? Were Woodward and Bernstein unwitting dupes to this plot? This revelation raises many more questions, IMHO.

Hmmm. Interesting. The link in the OP has Woodward and Bernstein confirming Felt was Deep Throat.

They must have updated the page since the original post.

Seems like the FBI spook at the other end of the phone was not driven by particularly honourable motives as some people might have hoped.
Weird times, though, when info on criminal actions could lead to incumbents being removed from office;)

Nowadays Bush has his placemen in charge of all branches of the security state. CIA, FBI, etc, he's got them all by the balls and as for the Washington Post, well, it is mostly just a conduit for government propaganda. Their recent response to the Downing Street memo was pathetic - they just looked the other way.

The Washington Post, like any other company, is driven by profit. They aren't controlled by the government, though I'm sure they are manipulated. I tend to agree with you; the Downing memo was remarkable. It's also hard to argue for it's worth as high crime and misdemeanor-type evidence. Either way, it's not the issue: the Post will cover most what people consume most. So what is pathetic, by your definition, is not the coverage, but the public's response.

The sad thing is, its a big revelation but ultimately is anti-climactic.

That was my thought. I was so excited I read the news accounts and then thought, "oh, ok...now what"

Mystery solved. It's kind of like finding out the magicians trick. Half the fun is in the not knowing. Oh well, next...

I saw Al Haig and John Dean interviewed on this:

Haig: Based on the research I did for my book I was sure it was Felt before the recent release.

Dean: The raises more questions than it answers. Maybe the composite deep throat theory is still valid and Felt was just one of them.

Pat Buchanon is on with Chris Matthews now claiming Felt is a commie and a traitor and a freedom hater and doesn't believe in Santa Claus.

Give it up Pat. The only bigger laughing stock in politics is Michael "Zero Pct" Badnarik, and you're getting awfully close.

I think there is an entirely different possibility. Here is my long running theory I've had for decades:

Take a look at Woodward and Bernstein's statement confirming Felt as "Deep Throat."

"W. Mark Felt was 'Deep Throat' and helped us immeasurably in our Watergate coverage," Woodward and Bernstein said in a statement. "However, as the record shows, many other sources and officials assisted us and other reporters for the hundreds of stories that were written in The Washington Post about Watergate"

This is a "cover your ass" statement if ever there was one. I think it will soon be shown that Felt couldn't have provided all the information W&B attributed to Deep Throat. I seriously doubt the FBI was using W&B to "do it's dirty work" for them.

Some people have surmised, reasonably so, that Deep Throat was a composite personality, and W&B's CYA statement sure does make it sound like that is the case.

However, W&B had a funny little habit which has since become an investigative journalism tradition, thanks in large part to W&B. This habit is that they would take facts known to them and make inferences from them about things which were not proven or established, and they would call these inferences "factoids." I call it "making ◊◊◊◊ up."

But then W&B would use Deep Throat to "confirm" these factoids.

It would be very tempting, and some reporters have been caught at it since, to attribute "facts" to "anonymous sources" that really don't exist just to get a story out there. This is particularly dangerous behavior if the reporter is politically motivated.

Anyone remember CIA director Casey's supposed bedside confession to Woodward?

Making ◊◊◊◊ up.
