Deep Impact probe go BOOM!

If Hollywood ever makes a movie out of it you can bet there will be lots of sound effects...

A great success for NASA and unmanned exploration. This is the kind of science that will be abandoned if we plunge ahead with the non-scientific agenda to put men on the moon and Mars. Currently threatened are satelites needed to maintain continuous monitoring of environmental trends on Earth and monitoring of data from the Voyager spacecraft, which is now at the boundary of interstellar space....

Agreed.

...Though if we do plunge ahead into setting foot on Mars, we might learn a thing or two about creating tightly controlled habitatable environments and maintaining them for long durations. Not that we'll really apply those lessons to everyday life.

I don't believe it. If there's anything we've learned from Armageddon, it's that in space, someone can hear you scream.
