How nice, Jas. I'm also one of those blessed with a great dad, and I can't think of my life without him. First of all, I look a lot like him and inherited his good health also. Second, I got his love for books, and for that I'm very grateful. More importantly, we truly enjoy each other's company. My father is the most ethical man on earth: if he tells a white lie, he can't fool a small child. He's so honest he gives me back 0.11 cents of change. He is so naive, people take him for a fool. He's not, he only ignores stupidity completely.

I don't want to be judgmental, and I realize that, in some situations, having no dad and better than having an abusive one. But I can't begin to imagine putting a child in this world without a GREAT dad to go along. I know, mistakes happen, but they are mistakes to be avoided. The ideal situation for a child is a loving mother and a loving father. Personally, I'd rather be childless than have one with the first who appears, even if my biologically clock were screaming. I realize reality is not always easy... but yeah, great dads make the effort worth it.

The above post is one of the reasons why the developed world is dying out.

Whether the developed world has a lower birth rate is one thing...it does...but whether that's the result of anything in LNs post is another thing...and I don't get that connection. Women in the developed world have fewer kids because they have a lot more options in life than just churning out a bunch of kids, not because they're reticent to have kids unless they have a great dad-to-be to go with it.

Please respond in the new thread that Claus will instigate. Thanks.

Oh you know, this thread was going along so nicely, all warm and fuzzy. Claus, I love ya man, but if you want to debate whether or not the developed world is dying out, might I humbly suggest that you split it off into another thread and not mess up this one.

Ed help us if this turns into another "Snake found in broccoli" thread.

Can we keep the content to awesome dads?

Anyone wants to debate the issue of the dying out of the developed world because women don't get as many babies as before can open a thread.

I wish the rest of the world would start to "die out" in the same way. If we don't start to reduce world population through pleasant demographic trends soon, then we will reduce it suddenly some day soon through massive and catastrophic means.

People used to have a hell of a lot more children because so many wouldn't make it to adulthood either because of illness or injury. Things have changed a bit since then...that is, unless you are a child in Iraq or Lebanon.

Exactly. Another factor that makes a higher birthrate unnecessary is the ready availability of good quality meat in our fine grocery stores.
