Damn you to hell.

Alright, how do I eliminate the the mouse selection......thing.....in all windows programs. I'm talking about when I'm trying to select a bit of code or a line of text and as I bring the mouse to the area where I want to select to, the selection block jumps far past where I want to select, and when I bring it back toward my actual target, it shoots way before the place I wanted to target.

I'm willing to give up the double click selects a word thing to fix this.

There is a special layer of hell for whoever devised this nasty bit of user interface.

Try fiddling with your mouse sensitivity settings.

Hadn't thought of that. I use a free editor for java, jedit, which has none of the "smart" selection stuff. Works like a dream. Where I click first with the mouse is where the selection starts, and where I release the button is where it stops. Doesn't include a parenthesis that I don't want, or a quote.

Special layer of hell.

Often you can ajust the selected area by holding down "Shift" and using left/right arrow.;)

Yeah, that's annoying.

I've found that if I move the mouse pointer back after too much stuff got selected, stuff gets unselected a letter at a time, the way it should, instead of a word at a time. That way, I can get the selection to end in the middle of a word. If I want a multiword selection to start in the middle of a word, I need to move past the first word, then back to within it, then forward again. And then possibly back again a bit to get the selection's end right, as before.

Bah.

That's great. Is there any way to make that the default, and have it select the other way when I hold shift?

The mouse angel has descended to conquer the layer of hell. My mouse has a setting called ClickLock.

When turned off, the mouse behaves as normal when selecting or highlighing text, i.e.. click, hold and drag over desired text.

When turned on, the mouse no longer requires you to click and hold the mouse and drag over the desired text to select it. Click once, for a length of time you tell it, at the desired beginning text area, and release the mouse. Then click the mouse for the same length of time at the end of the desired text selection. Walla! The exact text you wanted is now selected, without ever the possibility of it jumping back or forth to undesired text areas.

I set mine so that I have to click it for about twice the time of my normal click. With two very quick mouse clicks, I can highlight any contiguous text flawlessly everytime. This also never affects normal use of the mouse, i.e. browsing etc..

I use a Logitech cordless optical, $40-$50 last time I checked. I go through the 2-AA batteries once every two months or so. Highly recommended.
