OK it's now fifty years, and two days, since UN Secretary General Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjold died in a plane crash while attempting to mediate the Congo war.
There have always been speculations that he was assassinated' by the Russians (who held him responsible for the death of Patrice Lumumba), the UK/USA (because he supported Lumumba and later Cyrille Adoula), the Belgians (who supported Moise Tshombe's Katangan separatists), mining interests (who wanted access to the mineral wealth of the Congo, specifically Katanga) plus other factions.

The BBC has a good piece on the theories, including some unanswered questions regarding a second aircraft, the presence of uniformed persons at the crash site earlier than admitted, the oddly unburned body of Hammarskjold and the mysterious ace of spades (if it existed).

And for those wishing to link it to other CTs, well it's the Congo; Leopold II, the Manhattan Project, Ebola, Oklo, the flying, fiery discs (allegedly) seen in MAR1952 and OCT1963, AIDS, vodoun, the fragment of metal (allegedly) recovered by Project Moon Dust.............

Of course it was a conspiracy. It was the same interests behind as in the murder of prime minister Lumumba. Belgian, British, American and South African mining interests.

I can't really see why this is a conspiracy theory. This plane didn't just fall out of the sky. It was brought down. Who the conspirators were is a good question. That there were conspirators at all is not. Just as interesting in this story is the death of the democratically elected Lumumba, killed by the Americans because he was a little populist and left wing for their tastes.

As an aside, I have visited the crash site in the copper belt of western Zambia. It is not very interesting, although it is nicely planted and tended.

Well, the official theory is that it was an accident. If you read Susan Williams book, you KNOW it is not. All the evidence is on record.

Who did it? Less important. Who was behind? Belgian, British, American and South African imperialist rasist mining interests.

I've been trying to track down Conor Cruise O'Brien's book, To Katanga and Back, for some time. And now it seems to have been republished.

CCO'B, of course, worked for Hammarskjold and believed there was something murky going on. I don't know exactly what as I haven't read the book.

According to a book I have by Tim Weiner about the CIA, it was a Belgian officer "of Flemish origin" who shot Lumumba with a "burst of submachine gun fire". But certainly the CIA are implicated to some extent.

On the subject of Cruise O'Brien and his book, To Katanga and Back, I found it rather self-serving. He attempts to justify his actions (and those of Khiara) in launching Operation Morthor, which went against UN policy, and common sense, were exposed as untrue by UN archive material. This is especially notable in his attempt to underplay his involvement with the operation by implying it was Khiari or Linnér who made critical decisions. He also covered up actions by Indian troops and proposed that ONUC should be prepared to execute prisoners.
Kennedy's Ireland, the United Nations and the Congo is a better work on those events.

I've been a passenger flying into the (now) DR Congo before. I have no problem whatsoever with the plane crash explanation. The region is full of marginally qualified pilots, some of the worst weather on Earth and hazardous air strips. Landing in Africa, more than once the pilot has had to buzz the strip to scare away wildlife so we could land.
