Singer Sheryl Crow and Inconvenient Truth producer Laurie David accosted Karl Rove at a Washington black-tie dinner regarding global warming and got into a "heated debate." Of course, Rove was offended at having to face the inconvenient truth that he can't argue effectively against a movie producer and a female singer.

Dinner debate heats up between Rove, Crow

POSTED: 1:40 p.m. EDT, April 22, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Karl Rove's debate with singer Sheryl Crow and producer Laurie David about global warming heated the atmosphere at a black-tie Washington dinner.

On the eve of Earth Day, Crow and "Inconvenient Truth" producer David walked over to the presidential adviser's table at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner Saturday night at the Washington Hilton.

Their differences on global warming quickly bubbled over, the Washington Post reported Sunday.

"I am floored by what I just experienced with Karl Rove," David said later. "I went over to him and said, I urge you to take a new look at global warming. He went zero to 100 with me. ... I've never had anyone be so rude."

Rove said: "She came over to insult me and she succeeded."

I haven't seen An Inconvienent Truth, but I think Sheryl Crow is a babe and I've liked some of her songs. On the other hand, I haven't liked anything Karl Rove has done and he reminds me of the mouse from Pinky & the Brain.

Does that mean Bush is Pinky?

Gee Brain, what do you want to do tonight?

Same thing we do every night, Pinky, try to take over the world!

Oh dear dog. You are right. They are Pinky and the Brain.

Does that make Cheney Larry?

5 points to anyone who gets that obscure Pinky & The Brain reference.

You all rock. I knew there was a reason I frequented this forum. 5 points for everyone, including Lisa's husband.

I don't know. I think Dick Cheney and Karl Rove are the principal players in the most corrupt, inept administration of my life. I think, Rove's partisan zeal has not only done enormous damage to the country but in the end it will have enormously damaged the Republican Party.

Still, while he seems to have definitely been a jerk in this exchange, I'm inclined to cut him a little slack here. He doesn't have a duty to engage every individual that confronts him at a social situation in serious discussion. AGW is a complex issue and perhaps Rove has seriously considered the issue* and just couldn't express himself well in the short time available for a discussion in this brief exchange. So he acted a little rudely in response to behavior that might be seen as a little rude.

* My guess is that he hasn't though. My cut at Rove is that he is a partisan driven completely by the political elements of any issue. I think he sees AGW like he sees every other issue, how can it be exploited to best advance his partisan agenda. Kind of annoying, from my point of view, that this guy draws a government salary.

And doubly annoying that he's likely behind every single scandal this administration has ever been involved in. I offer my kudos to Crow in spite of being so confrontational, because she actually got to confront Rove on a single issue. How many questions would the JREF skeptics toss into his lap if given the chance?

The important thing to remember is that this is only one side of story. Rove's telling could have him being ambushed at a party by a couple of nut jobs and I could understand what it would be like to be put on the spot like that.

Honestly, I wouldn't expect better of Rove under better circumstances, but I think that was probably the wrong place at the wrong time to have that debate in a civilized way.

This is just nonsensical paranoia. And it doesn't even match the typical accusation that the whole administration is corrupt, because it implies that nobody could do anything scandalous without Karl's help. Do you think that the administration would be spotless except for Rove's involvement? Somehow I doubt it.

Just because they could've done it without him doesn't mean that he's not involved in all of it at some level. On the other hand, it is a little ambitious to suspect he's got is hand in everything. Is he responsible for getting Shaha Riza's security clearance, for instance? Perhaps not.

In any case, I chalk up the accusation of the omnipotent Rove to hyperbole, founded on innumerable examples, rather than to nonsensical paranoia.

Okay, maybe I did go too far, and I'll reserve judgement on whether or not Rove was responsible for Jeff Gannon roaming the White House after hours. ;)

Crow and David call Rove rude - That's rich.

They approached his table and began lecturing him on global warming uninvited. Yeah, he's the one who's rude Laurie.

There was a time when the White House was open to comments and questions from the American public. Jefferson's administration was particularly noteworthy for letting anyone come in and see the President. I imagine that if some wealthy lobbyist had approached Rove, they would have received a different response.

Yeah, I remember something about "government for the people, of the people and by the people," a long time ago. Whatever happened to that? ;)

I think Sheryl Crow is a babe
I once thought so too, until this:

Sheryl Crow said:
I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting. Now, I don't want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required.

Sorry Sheryl, you're not wiping properly using 3 squares for "pesky occasions". Yeeeech! :eye-poppi
