Crop Circles Strike Again

Making crop circles and dogging. Nocturnal activities that make me proud to be British.

Still trying to work out how it's a representation of pi...duh...

Crop circles ... the modern pyramids. There is just no stinkin' way that human beans could create such a thing all by themselvies.

Well, there is of course an exception, that being the small crop circles that for eons have been suspected to have been caused by frigging middle of the night parties, people dancing around under the moonlight and such, likely to some satanic influence(s) or other dastardly cause.

Wise leaders of the village, not wanting to let on who they suspected, would attribute the causation of these swirling, crushed circular pattern of 6' weeds to supernatural deities. No one would protest, since the alternate hypothesis likely implicated their own...

Kentucky, 1972. Natural crop circle, 50-80 feet around.

From the article in the OP:

"...They come out as 3.141592654."

As any math geek knows, that's the first 10 digits of pi

Any maths geek knows that the first 10 digits are 3.141592653. (The 4 comes from rounding up as the next one's a 5.)

Amazing how crop circles have grown more intricate and nuanced over the years. It's almost like hoaxers were learning how to create crop circles and then constantly trying to refine and enhance their techniques in order to top their previous accomplishments.

On the BBC TV Have I Got News For You quiz programme last week they had a clip of the two (now rather elderly) people who created the first crop circles, showing how they did it using a short plank of wood and a piece of string. I can't find what news item it came from, unfortunately.

Look at the coloured diagram in the centre.
Start in the middle, counting the number of segments in an expanding spiral:
Red 3
Green (with dot for decimal point) 1
Purple 4
Orange 1
Blue 5
Yellow 9
Pink 2
Red 6
Green 5
Blue 4

For the most part, Crop Circles are basically graffiti for people who live in the country-sides.

I normally don't agree with all the things James Randi says, but regarding this issue he basically said that people like this "Need to get a life".

That's a nice crop circle art example.

About two years ago a superb Nat Geo/Discovery channel show on crop circles followed some circle makers who did detailed design, and then recorded the responses of the crop circle believers.

The folks who make them these days are, if nothing else, fine artists in their medium. :)

There seems to be higher crop circle incidence in areas with higher cider consumption.

Correlation is not causation, of course.

I think the farmers whose fields are used get a bit pissed off by them. Apart from the damage to their crop caused by the people who make them there is the damage caused by the idiots who turn up to look at them.

I suppose they can charge people, though, which might make up for any loss. Perhaps the farmers pay people to create them.
