Couple of Linux questions

I've a couple of questions regarding Linux:

Firstly, has there been any major new releases this year, preferably new distros, but substantial revisions of existing ones will do.

Secondly, what are your favourite excellent-but-obscure Linux distros, and why do you like them? I'm enjoying Ubuntu, but am interested to learn about distributions which don't grab the headlines.

Not all distros have revisions; I've never even really understood what a distro revision is. It's the packages that get updated.

Slackware 12.0 came out in July.

I prefer Slackware mostly because it doesn't get in its own way. It requires you to understand what's happening on a fairly fundamental level, but will let you do whatever to tell it to do.

I've been using Ubuntu as my exclusive operating system since May of 2005 and it has worked great. Very few problems. I just upgraded to 7.10 beta.

I also think that Linux + Firefox + the NoScript extension are about the safest Internet experience you can have.

I have kubuntu on my laptop, and debian on my desktop machine.

Oh Linux how I love you so!

eta: I keep a copy of knoppix handy for fixing other machines
