In listing the United States, you really should list the individual states separately. Some have it, others do not.

Federal death penalties only apply where the individual states have no juristiction (like in the Army or for treason).

Nice to know the accused child killer now on trial in Belgium won't be getting the death penalty if convicted. Too civilized, I guess.

On the other hand, Japan recently sentenced the cult leader who ordered the use of nerve gas in several crowded subway stations to death. Nerve gas in rush hour stations. Now if that doesn't warrant the death penalty, nothing does.

I guess my feeling on the death penalty is pretty basic: Some people just deserve it.

Yep, that's pretty much it :)

I actually don't have a huge problem with the death penalty for people who are definitely guilty of horrific crimes, with no chance that they've been wrongfully convicted. The trouble is, who makes the decision that someone is definitely guilty?

We've had enough miscarriages of justice in the UK in the last 30 years to know that looking guilty and being guilty aren't the same thing and a posthumous aquittal isn't much consolation to anyone.

I believe that the list of countries which allow the death penalty for those under the age of 18 at the time they commited the offence is considerably shorter.

from Amnesty International

Since January 1990 Amnesty International has documented 35 executions of child offenders in eight countries– the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the USA, China and Yemen. The USA carried out 19 executions – more than all other countries combined.

U-S-A.....U-S-A.....U-S-A......Number 1

Yeah, but don't forget that they only execute them once they've been remanded long enough to be age 18 or over. So that's okay.

Hey, don't forget those countries who will execute the mentally retarted. We'll execute anyone! Now, that's equality!

IMO there is nothing wrong with the principle of the death penalty...it is how it is applied that is the problem.

Quit beating around the bush. The implication is that the US is backwards just like that list of screwball countries.

Well how about a list of countries were abortion is legal. Suddenly the US isnt so backwards when killing unborn babies.

I'm just wondering, I can understand why you have countries like Afghanistan, China, Iran, etc. on the list of 'All countries', but why are India, Russia and Singapore not also on the list of 'Modern' countries? Although they aren't 'perfect', they are democracies, and have various freedoms not available in most of the other countries on the list.

My thinking is that modern equates to democratic, first-world economy.

Let's not forget that Japan executes its prisoners in secret. According to Amnesty, there are around 50 prisoners in Japan's jails who have been sentenced to death and have had their sentences upheld by Japan's Supreme Court.

They could be executed at any time, and no one will know about it until after it happens.

Also, Amnesty says they execute the mentally ill as well.

It's a data point; do with it what you will.

I'd be interested to see the list of countries where abortion is legal.
