I am having the exact opposite problem from this person:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings/can-you-set-windows-10-clock-to-chime-on-the-hour/acadd004-9729-4482-b60e-ddee4679c88f[/url

My computer is in fact, chiming each hour and I can not find a way to disable the chime. Going to <Alarms & Clocks> from <Start> shows only the <Good Morning> notification. Clicking on the <Notifications Setting> link in that window does not show an hour chime.

I am using Windows 10 Home, version 1909.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

And dammit, I tried to get the link thing to work. Grr

Right click on the speaker symbol on the task bar, and click sounds. Then scroll down the list trying various options until you find the sound you're hearing.

Once you find it you can either see if you can find if that same sound is being triggered by something in that list - or you can just delete the wav file. Hopefully that would stop it happening?

Thanks for the response.

There was nothing in the sound settings that resembles "clock chime" or similar.

Also, there is nothing in the notification settings that does either.

There is no chime.wav file or similar that I can find.

1. Open your Task Manager and check the Startup tab to see if there is something that runs on boot up that might be causing this

2. Check in your Event Viewer...

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Event Viewer

...and see if there is some service or app appearing every hour.

ETA: Oh, and check in Apps > Alarms & Clock to make sure you don't have an Alarm set with a snooze time of one hour

I know nothing about chimes. However, if bells were your problem, I would suggest trying to find the hunchback in your system and eliminating him.

Nothing shows in Event Viewer.

Also no alarms – but I don't think an alarm would chime the hour, it would just sound one time.

You've checked the "Alarms & Clock" app?

In older versions of windows to get an hourly "chime" you could set up a repeating alarm, you set an alarm to say 8am and then set snooze to be an hour.

Just had a quick look and it looks like it would still work? So perhaps a double check?

Should have read this better - sorry.

Did you upgrade from Wins7 or 8? I think they used to have a "desktop gadget" that would do this? It could be that is still working in the background?

This is a new Windows 10 install, in a new laptop. The Alarms & Clock setting isn't present.

Also, I don't think a straight alarm would chime the correct number of times for each hour, it would only chime once. I am getting 1 chime for 1 o'clock, two chimes for 2 o'clock, etc. Like a grandfather clock.

Really? That is surprising, because I have four computers that are all Win 10 new installs (2 x 32bit and 2 x 64 bit). They all have the Alarms & Clock app installed by default. Rememebr is at App not a program - they are in a different list....

Go to Start "Apps" (it should be just below "All Programs").

If there is no "Apps" listed, it could still be there...

Go to Start & type "Alarm" the search box

Try this, perhaps.

Wait until 10, 11 o'clock, when it's going to chime a good number of times. Then right after the first chime, or ahead of time, right-click on your volume control on the notifications area, and select "Open Volume Mixer." Keep an eye on the volume levels as it continues to chime, and that will tell you what program is producing the chime. Hopefully not as generic as "system sounds."

I've just had a quick look around the net, and can see that some "Calendar apps" have this as a feature. It's worth trying to see if you have anything like that.

Thanks for the suggestion, however the only calendar app I have is ClickTrayCalendar, a freeware program I have been using for at least 15 years. It has no audio features at all.

This problem did not start until I got my new laptop several weeks ago.

Is the problem on your new laptop?

There has long been a problem known as 'shovelware' or 'crapware', about pre-installed software on new equipment.

If you can post some details about the make and model, I'll look around to see if it something in the laptop's BIOS. That would be unusual I think, but another avenue worth checking.

Here's another one to check for:

Well all I can do is tell you what worked for me in trying to find out how to disable the chime alarm that played every hour on the hour. It drove me nuts quite frankly but if that is what you are looking to have, you can find it in W10 under the Gadgets called "Date Time." It is a small, thin bar that is displayed on the desktop which shows the date & time. The options function gives you the choice of having an alarm sound every hour. You can do this by clicking on the config tab, then checking the box that says "Hourly Notify -- enable?" By enabling this the computer will chime every hour on the hour. Hope that helps. This is the easiest way to be reminded that each hour has arrived. Enjoy!! :)

Oops, I missed this one.

My apologies.

I may not have been the only one.

Again, let us know the details of the laptop, and I'll look for BIOS info.
