Do you see christianity (and islam) ever dying out like the religions of old? Christians will tell you that we have reached a time of moral decay and ungodlyness aka the "end times". But is christianity really in the sh!tty state that christians think it's in?

Yes. But we'll all be long dead.

If you haven't read them all, check out Arthur Clarke's 2001-3001 series for some good visionary ideas about the fate of religion.

Some Xtians may think we are in the "end times." I certainly don't have enough wisdom to know that. I think the current state of American Xtianity is dysfunctional. People are stuck in their little boxes and don't have compassion or understanding of others with different belief/non-belief systems. I think Xtianity will survive, but in what form, I can't tell.

Imagine Star Trek, only fundies get their hands on star ships and go and spread the word to all the aliens.

"Jesus died for YOUR sins, too!", they cry out to a croud of tentacled aliens, their eyestalks protruding above a pool of acrid smelling liquid....

Well I think you have two different questions here. I think that the 'moral decay' that the Christians like to fume about is more of a recruiting tool than anything. Christianity still has a lot of power in this country, and a lot of things (i.e. gay marraige) are opposed by a majority in this country on religious grounds.

As for the ultimate fate of Christianity, I think that it will eventually die out or change into something unrecognizable to its current adherents, if history is any indication, but I seriously doubt that it will be in our lifetimes or even our grandchildrens lifetimes. It is too powerful right now and these things happen at an almost glacial pace. The only way that might change is if some other entity replaces it. But unless you are willing to entertain the idea of space alien missionaries coming to our planet (I know that I find that idea pretty far-fetched), I have no idea what that entity may be or where it would come from.

Amen :D

I think christianity will evolve into something unrecognizable to modern day worshippers. In the end, it's all about getting people in the pews. Religion will adapt as the people do. Will it ever go away? probably not, beacuase IMO people will always need a moral compass to set there lives by, and religion in general accomplishes that, if practiced correctly.

Christianity has changed so many times already, such that modern christians wouldn't even recognize early christianity if they saw it.

I'm sure it'll keep changing and changing and changing.

I'm sure xtianity will be around for a long long time, but I hope it will become one of those religions where you're embarrassed to be a part of it, and people snicker loudly when you walk into a room...

I give American Xianity another 80 years. The young people today will have kids too plugged-in, busy and educated to believe the nonsense. It is only as prevalent as it is now because of a small number of the powerful who pander and pay lip-service to an older generation. The people of an age to be in charge in the US today are mostly from a culture of woo-woo hippies in the 60's. It's just a matter of time. When was the last time you saw a sound-bite of a Prez going to church? Nope. Now they go shopping to show they are in tough with the people.

Religion will flourish in 3rd world countries where people have to struggle and need a shield against the truth of the reality of their situation.

"Lather, rinse, repeat"

It won't die out anytime soon, but it will continue to mutate.

The "end times" types have always existed, but do not dominate the religion.

Christianity wont last forever, I figure the end of Christianity will come in... oh say about 6 years, maybe 8...

[...] Where two or three are gathered in my name, I shall be there with them.

It doesn't say anything about pews in that quote. Are you commenting on a form of Christianity that is based on something other than the Bible?

But Yahweh, I'd like to live longer than 6-8 more years... ;)
