Chiro claim check...

My 85-year-old grandfather is having some sciatic nerve pain and has been seeing a chiropractor. Now, I know about the far-out chiro claims, but I've got nothing against being (physically) manipulated - it's along the lines of an aggressive massage, as far as I know, and that at least feels good. That appears to all that the chiro did with my grandfather, along with some heat.

However, he did say he "didn't want to get too aggressive for fear it may stimulate the growth" of the prostate cancer that my grandfather is also dealing with. With that phrase, my quack alarm gave a gentle ping, but it's not something I can definitively make a pronouncement about. Is there any medical evidence that something a chiro might do would affect cancerous growth in any way? Instinct says no, but hey, I make filing cabinets - whadda I know? Any information is appreciated - the guy just wants to play some more golf...

HECK NO!

sorry for shouting. Just got excited.

When I was a student we were told not to handle mammary tumours roughly or squeeze them in case we encouraged cells to break off and metastatise. However, I have no idea if there was any evidence at all that this was a real danger, or if it was just the lecturer making it up as he went along.

I can't imagine anything physical increasing the risk of a prostate cancer metastatising, in practical terms, but theoretically, I suppose you could postulate something.

I'm wondering why the guy would be worried about making the prostrate cancer grow... unless he's massaging the prostate? And why would he be massaging the tumour anyway? Massaging around it won't stimulate growth...

That's pretty much what my warning light was telling me. Spanks for the further info, though.

Rolfe, I've learned that handling mammaries themselves roughly is a bad idea...

Oh, yes, so was I, of course.

Why would he massage the prostate to treat sciatica? Seems a bit odd. I'm guardedly positive about chiropractic for some problems, but this sounds to me like one for a physiotherapist.

Are you sure he's seeing a chiropractor and not a, uhm, "pay for play" consultant?
