A STERN ANSWER

Reader Paul Hill tells us:

James Van Praagh was on Howard Stern this morning. Howard et al. don't believe in psychics and made it known. James didn't make any readings, but made himself sound silly. One highpoint was saying that he would do a reading for Howard and Artie Lang privately, off the air. The next was that he knows where Chandra Levy's body is, but he's not telling! Why? "It's not the right time."

Oh. I see. But just when, James, might the right time be....? Hello? James?

Are we missing something here? Hello James? Hello the other James? Hello anyone?

Chandra Levy's remains found in D.C. park

May 22, 2002 Posted: 10:37 PM EDT (0237 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The skeletal remains of missing former Washington intern Chandra Levy were found in a park in northwest Washington on Wednesday, almost 13 months after she vanished without a trace.

Police Chief Charles Ramsey made the grim announcement about 6 p.m., after the remains found Wednesday morning in Washington's Rock Creek Park were identified through dental records. He said the investigation, previously treated as a missing person case, would now be treated as a death investigation.

"The medical examiner's investigation into the manner and cause of death is still pending," he said. "We have found quite a bit of the skeletal remains."

This was actually brought up during the show and Praugh tried to imply that the body was not Chandra or that it was only part of her body.

Edit: FWIW

Not very clear from the exchange James Randi reported. It has been proved:

a. it was her remains

b. know where she is: in a cemetary in California

c. all that was left were her bones and it was theorized that
animals may have made off with some of them. In fact if I recall
it was a dog on a walk that found her and the cops were criticized for not using a professional dog soner.

Did James VanPragh first say he knew where she was, then was told by someone else (e.g. Stern) she has been found and then made up the story about it not being her or not all of her?

All I'm telling is what I remember from the show. The Stern gang actually didn't remember Levy's body was found until Robin Quivers off-handedly mentioned "Hey didn't they find her body in a park or something?".

Meh.

Okay, thanks. Save for Robin, sounds like they are all a bunch of airheads including vanPrig who forgot or didn't know they ever found her remains and then tried to cover his rear after Robin said something. I trust out of respect for Chandra Levy Randi will further correct Mr. VanPragh's claim, made now even more absurd by the truth of this case. Its sunds like had not Robin said something, James VP would have stood by his claim without qualification as to the known facts in this case.

And from the way Randi editorialized on this, sounds like he forgot or didn't know either since he is asking Van Pragh to let us know when he's going to tell us where the remains are? (e.g. in Lakewood Memorial Park near Modesto, Calfornia put there by Chandra's parents). Clearly Randi did not watch Howard Stern and see this and got it from a third party over whose head this also flew.

Here is the ultimate answer to VanPragh's gaff:

Levys bury daughter in private
Chandra Levy
Read the death notice posted by Chandra's family or post in the guest book.

Chandra Levy's remains were laid to rest at Lakewood Memorial Park on Tuesday, in a private ceremony attended by family and investigators who still hope to solve her murder.
The 11 a.m. service at the cemetery between Empire and Hughson took place without the cameras that have shadowed the case since Levy disappeared two years ago. It was a deliberate hush.

Since I'm at work I can't post a link to it, but if you Google for Mark's Friggin Howard Stern site, you should be able to get a running commentary on the show, and I think his site has a search function. That should clear up some confusion about what was said, and when.

That is an incredibly cruel thing to say.

Let's be real, when Uri Geller was on Stern, Robin was the only one who thought he was using genuine psychic powers.

(That show was the only time that Randi made any sort of appearance on Stern, BTW.)

Randi was physically on the program or physically was on the phone when Geller was there?

He was on the phone later in the show. The moment Geller left most of the crew were speculating how he did it (poorly, I might add) and they tried to get in touch with Penn. But they ended up in touch with Randi and he explained the many possible ways Geller could have done his tricks.

Apparently, some of the radio shows that Geller was appearing on later that day got wind and called Randi for advice. The result being that Geller's already mediocre appearance on Stern went downhill rapidly.
