Censorship in Canada?

There is a big presumption here that Telefilm will not allow an anti-government documentary to be funded. The national media in Canada is CBC, and they have done many anti-government shows and stuff.

Peter Worthington is the editor of the Toronto Sun. The various "Sun" newspapers across Canada have the same editorial direction that Fox news has here in the US.

Notwithstanding patronage scandals, Canada has a good track record of keeping its government accountable. I'm sure this documentary will be shown and probably on CBC.

Charlie (pining for CBC) Monoxide

I don't doubt that, but I worry about any agency that exists to promote one or another orthodoxy. This is particularly dangerous in a secular civil government.

/nitpick
Peter Worthington hasn't been the editor for about 10 years I believe. He's now just another columnist specializing on the military issues. Now the paper is just another colorless corporate newpaper rather than the freewheeling Sun of old.
/off nitpick

CBC actually does show anti-government shows and things but still the balance is always weighed incredibly towards pro-goverment. I used to work there in the late 90's and actually sat in on some discussions. Total airheads in control of billions of dollars of our money.

Mulroney brought down the Conservatives and offered up Kim Campbell as a sacrifice, let's hope Chretien is doing the same thing with Martin..:D

Ughh, don't get me started on Telefilm.

The intent behind Telefilm is great. Provide funding for Canadian film and TV. An admirable mandate to be sure. In fact, as someone who works in the film biz, I've worked on a number of projects funded by Telefilm.

The problem arises when they are given carte blanche to render decisions on what is "suitable" or "fundable." Then they are all over the map. They are inconsistent in their decisions and it's hard to ever really get a guage what goes on behind the scenes in terms of who receives funding and who doesn't.

Like Charlie Monoxide, I have faith that this documentary will air on CBC. Telefilm is not the end all be all when it comes to Canadian film and TV. It's simply one possible route to take when getting funding and distribution.

Given the complete half-assed support of the government for the Kyoto Protocol, I don't see why they'd censor people who oppose it...
