"President Obama employed a little religious rhetoric today, speaking to students in North Carolina about his plan to lower interest rates for student loans.
Obama told the students that since they were born, tuition and fees at colleges have doubled.
"And that forces students like you to take on a lot more loans, there are fewer grants, you rack up a lot more debt," Obama stated.
"Can I get an Amen for that?" he asked the crowd who cheered, "AMEN!"
"Now, the average student who borrows to pay for college, now graduates with with about $25,000 in debt, that's the average, he added,
"Some have more," he said. "Can I get an Amen for that?"

They told me if I voted for McCain, the president would insert religion into public education, and they were right!

Except when they aren't.

Amen
interjection
1.
it is so; so be it (used after a prayer, creed, or other formal statement to express solemn ratification or agreement).
Also, Amen
Common English translations of the word amen include "verily" and "truly". It can also be used colloquially to express strong agreement, as in, for instance, amen to that.

Aside from the more common usage of the term itself (which can have a secular meaning), what is particularly religious about what he was saying?

So...

What's your point?

I like how he doesn't have a plan to actually do anything about the exploding cost of tertiary education, but lowering interest rates for the debts they will have to rack up gets an "AMEN!"

Saying the word "amen" does strike me as pretty similar to denying centuries of biological discoveries.

Why does the cost of higher education go up? Because the more loans and hand-outs given, the more the price of college is bid upwards. Colleges ask for 30, 40, 50 thousand a year because with all the handouts, that's what they can get. It is is mindful to note that it was the Dems who put in place the rise in interest rates for these loans. But the Pres. never had a course in Econ 101 and thus has absolutely no clue, not that it would matter for his election bid, if he did have a clue. Can I get an "Amen"??? Or how about an Um, Umm Ummm??

No, not even close.

Since Obama took office, the federal government has added another $5 trillion to our debt (which is now $15.6 trillion). We're adding another $4 billion today. Each American's share of the national debt is $50,000.

Can I get an amen?

You don't really care about the debt.

The debt is mainly caused by the 2008 implosion, the Bush tax cuts, and the two wars Bush started. The GOP forced an extension of the Bush tax cuts and Romney and Ryan want to add 10 trillion to the debt with a big giveaway to the wealthy. They also want to attack Iran.

You don't really care about the debt.

They did? When was that?

Let's back up for a moment. At issue is a 2007 law, set to expire on July 1, which keeps the interest rate for federal Direct Stafford Loans at 3.4%. If Congress fails to act, the rate will double, affecting more than 7.4 million students, who'll face, on average, an additional $1,000 in debt. President Obama and congressional Democrats are fighting to keep the rates where they are, and Mitt Romney agrees with them.
Congressional Republicans have balked at the proposals, and today, Boehner is arguing that this is all Democrats' fault anyway -- they're the ones who "included an expiration provision that placed the looming increase in the middle of an election year."
Democrats wanted to lower student interest rates. Now, they want to keep the lower student interest rates. As far as Boehner is concerned, this means Dems "voted to double" interest rates.

Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't. But do you care about the debt?

I can't speak for Unabogie, but I don't care about the size of the debt as much as I care about the size and state of the economy. A balanced budget that pays off debt isn't going to magically make the economy bounce back. The problem of focusing on the debt is that you lose sight of the big picture.

That doesn't make any sense. How does it follow from your comments that I don't care about the debt?

"For he's a jolly good deiteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey
And so say all of us."

You're both right. I've personally heard members of the Obama administration use the names of the days of the week, which is proof that they're forcing belief in Norse and Roman gods on us!

When asked if I care about the debt, my standard response is I care as much now as when GWB was president, how about you?

At that point I'm usually given various reasons which, when the air is boiled out amount to "Obama is president now".
