There was a discussion a while ago about how daunting it can be for a first-timer at TAM. Everyone else seems to know each other, and it's sometimes tough to go up to a group of 'old friends' and introduce yourself. When I jokingly mentioned that I have an "ASK ME I'm shy" button from http://www.nancybuttons.com , one person said that they'd wear a button like that at TAM8 to help break the ice.

So KittyNH and I came up with an idea on having custom buttons made for TAM8. They'd be free to first-time attendees if they want them at the Forum table. A donor has offered to cover the $100 cost for 100 buttons, but is willing to pay less. Contact KittyNH if you wish to contribute. N.B. this is a gift to first-time attendees so don't try to donate if it's your first TAM.:p

These buttons are just to help people break the ice, so talk to anyone wearing one! If this is your first TAM, take one if you want to advertise that fact and want strangers starting conversations with you.

Now for the hard part: What should the buttons say?

We came up with some ideas, but KittyNH and I think you can come up with some better ones. So far we have
* Talk to me, it's my first TAM
* TAM newbie
* First TAM

The winning slogan will be chosen by some arbitrary process that KittyNH will come up with later. :D

we NEED SUGGESTIONS!

Like, come on clever people!

"TAM virgin, please be gentle" has already been rejected.

I like the word "Freshman" for some reason.

How about: "TAM8 Freshman Class"

Or, simply have it say "Freshman", in big letters, with the TAM8 logo somewhere on it.

Scrut could go around with a button that says "Spoiledman".

"I went to TAM8 and all I got was this lousy button..." ;)

What about

This is my first time
so it would make
the experience
better if you talk
to me. Alternatively
give me money for
alcohol to drown
my sorrows.

Are these 1" diameter buttons? I have a button machine. I can make buttons for free as a donation for TAM if needed. :)

How about: "I'm new here. I probably haven't met you, and if I did, I forgot your name."

That will probably pretty accurately describe me...

Or you could use the short form: "NOOB!"

Ask me about my avatar.
- or -
Ask me about my forum nickname.

(That 2nd one is getting a tad long for a tiny button though)

If on the other hand, the idea is to give them to ALL the people who are new at TAM (not just forum people), then perhaps 100 buttons isn't going to be enough.

Do what we did in the singles group where my wife and I met.

Just wear a yellow/green/orange/ultraviolet or whatever colour badge you choose - any (written) "message" is irrelevant. All it has to do is identify that the person is a newbi.

It's that simple. Don't make it complicated.
