Buchanan on the Neocons

No, he remains a cunning yet illiterate idiot.

What the hell does that mean? Cunning??? It's like saying my dog is spicey. He is obviously not illiterate. Of course, whether someone is an idiot or not, except in the original meaning of the word, is purely a subjective matter.

Bush's team of Powell, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice, says Adelman, "turned out to be among the most incompetent teams in the postwar era. Not only did each of them, individually, have enormous flaws, but together they were deadly, dysfunctional." Their incompetence, he adds, "means that most everything we ever stood for ... lies in ruins."

Professor Eliot Cohen of Johns Hopkins, whose book on war leaders Bush used to carry about, says his mistake was in not knowing "how incredibly incompetent" the Bush team would be.

Buchanan is sucking up.
Excusing Bush by assigning blame to others is not 'a good piece'.
Bush has demonstrated minimal competence ever since he quit cheerleading.

You didn't really read the article did you. Buchanan has never defended Bush.

I'm suspect many of you do not like Pat Buchanan. I happen to like him although there are a number of issues on which I strongly disagree with him. I think this is a good piece.
I dunno. Maybe it's stuff like this.

Patrick Buchanan said:
  • Who are beneficiaries of the Court's protection? Members of various minorities including criminals, atheists, homosexuals, flag burners, illegal immigrants (including terrorists), convicts, and pornographers.

  • Parents have a right to insist that godless evolution not be taught to their children.

  • What's the Christian-bashing all about? Simple - a struggle for the soul of America is under way, a struggle to determine whose views, values, beliefs and standards will serve as the basis of law.

  • Our culture is superior because our religion is Christianity and that is the truth that makes men free.

  • We need a new Supreme Court where only constitutionalists need apply, ... A court that will respect both states' rights and human rights and will begin to undo the damage done this nation by judicial aggressions, beginning with that abomination they call 'Roe v. Wade'.

  • There were no politics to polarize us then, to magnify every slight. The 'negroes' of Washington had their public schools, restaurants, bars, movie houses, playgrounds and churches; and we had ours.

  • Integration of blacks and whites -- but even more so, poor and well-to-do -- is less likely to result in accommodation than it is in perpetual friction, as the incapable are placed consciously by government side by side with the capable.

  • (Multiculturalism is) an across-the-board assault on our Anglo-American heritage.

  • Hitler's success was not based on his extraordinary gifts alone. His genius was an intuitive sense of the mushiness, the character flaws, the weakness masquerading as morality that was in the hearts of the statesmen who stood in his path.

  • Writing of "group fantasies of martyrdom," Buchanan challenged the historical record that thousands of Jews were gassed to death by diesel exhaust at Treblinka: "Diesel engines do not emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody."

  • Homosexuality is not a civil right. Its rise almost always is accompanied, as in the Weimar Republic, with a decay of society and a collapse of its basic cinder block, the family.

  • AIDS is nature's retribution for violating the laws of nature.

  • The real liberators of American women were not the feminist noise-makers, they were the automobile, the supermarket, the shopping center, the dishwasher, the washer-dryer, the freezer.

  • Buchanan devotes a chapter of his autobiography -- "As We Remember Joe" -- to defending Senator Joe McCarthy. He advocated that Nixon "burn the tapes" during Watergate, and he criticized Reagan for failing to pardon Oliver North over Iran-contra.

So I just can't figure out why everybody doesn't love him.

Just because I don't like Bush doesn't mean I like everybody who disagrees with him.

Buchanan won the New Hampshire primary. For that, I must thank him. He single-handedly made our primary irrelevant, and opened up the field for other states. Jerk.

(a friend of mine's wife ran into Buchanan while he was stumping in Manchester [NH]. He wanted a photo op while kissing her baby...she called him a Nazi while the cameras were on; her only regret is that it did not make the evening news.)

I don't see him as a Nazi, but more of an "America firster" style isolationist, which is odd, given his work in the Nixon administration. (Nixon's foreign policy was hardly isolationist.) Pat B strikes me as a Republican right out of Woodrow Wilson's era.

How does your dog taste on a bun?

He is obviously not illiterate. Of course, whether someone is an idiot or not, except in the original meaning of the word, is purely a subjective matter.

You are right, he is not illiterate (unless perhaps someone has been ghost-writing all his material). As to the question of his idiocy, he is not one, in the clinical sense. What he is, is a slimy, conniving, verminous, two-faced neo-Nazi. He is occasionally right about something. But even Hitler was occasionally right about something. Holocaust deniers like Buchanan deserve nothing but scorn.

He's a holocaust denier? Obviously, I missed a memo. I thought he was more in accord with the rabbis who claim the holocaust is being abused for political purposes of dubious merit, but I admit, I have not read Pat's entire body of work.

Patrick Buchanan, "Dividing Line," New York Post, March 17, 1990.

Is this collective perjury? No, something else. Since the war, 1,600 medical papers have been written on "The Psychological and Medical Effects of the Concentration Camps on Holocaust Survivors."

This so-called "Holocaust Survivor Syndrome" involves "group fantasies of martyrdom and heroics." Reportedly, half of the 20,000 survivor testimonies in Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem are considered "unreliable," not to be used in trials.

Finally, the death engine. During the war, the underground government of the Warsaw Ghetto reported to London that the Jews of Treblinka were being electrocuted and steamed to death.

The Israeli court, however, concluded that the murder weapon for 850,000 was the diesel engine from a Soviet tank which drove its exhaust into the death chamber. All died in 20 minutes, Finkenstein swore in 1945.

The problem is: Diesel engines do not emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody. In 1988, 97 kids, trapped 400 feet underground in a Washington, DC tunnel while two locomotives spewed diesel exhaust into the car, emerged unharmed after 45 minutes.

Demjanjuk's weapon of mass murder cannot kill. The Soviet I.D. cards are patent forgeries. Polish witnesses say "Ivan" was another man; Israeli eyewitnesses contradict their own sworn statements, contradict one another, and are contradicted in turn.

But you can read this thread and draw your own conclusions.

Have it your way: he's not cunning.

He is obviously not illiterate.
Have you read the article?

It's like he's declared war on the English language in the name of cheap journalism.

"Case in point, the neoconservatives. As the Iraq war heads into its fifth year, more than half a dozen have confessed to Vanity Fair's David Rose their abject despair over how the Bushites mismanaged the war that they, the "Vulcans," so brilliantly conceived. "

That is so nearly English.

Of course, whether someone is an idiot or not, except in the original meaning of the word, is purely a subjective matter.
No. He's an idiot.
