More than 420 people have now been killed by flooding and mudslides in south-eastern Brazil, officials say.

About 200 people have died in the town of Nova Friburgo, some 175 in Teresopolis and dozens more in Petropolis, media report. Thousands of people have been made homeless.

Rio de Janeiro Governor Sergio Cabral blamed local governments for allowing poor building and illegal occupations.
Just awful.

Yeah, I noticed that. I think there are forum members from Brazil?

It hasn't got much attention here (Australia) because of our preoccupation with our own flood problems.

Someone very near and dear to me is in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro right now. Luckily, Luciana informed me that the city itself has not been affected. I still feel a little uneasy so if anyone has any new information, please keep me updated.

So tragic. Did anyone see the video of that woman being rescued and losing her dog? My thoughts to any Brazilian members.

The affected cities are at a mountain range (Serra do Mar) north of Rio de Janeiro city. I was at another state when it all happened. Rio de Janeiro city itself has not suffered with those mudslides and flash floods. The tragedy was the result of natural features (geomorphology, soil profile, climate) and anthropic influence (basically the lack of propper land use plans and slope/drainage monitoring and warning).
I know at least two people with relatives missing.
The really sad part is that it was not unforeseen. It was predictable and many have warned about the danger. Politicians, however, seemed to have other concerns than the lives of the voters. No, I don't think this will change.

Yes. I'm an animal lover and I almost felt like crying. It sucks all these floods and stuff are happening in all these diverse places. Pakistan had another earthquake too. I have been keeping the world in my prays hard this past year hoping God would come show everyone his Glory, Protect them, and all that stuff.

I'm worried about California too. They have been through a lot over the years and Scientists saying there is a good possibility they getting big flood next.
