ATHENS, Greece -- The singer behind the Live 8 humanitarian benefit concert is blaming China for the continuing civil war in Sudan's Darfur region.

Irish rocker Bob Geldof said China is protecting the Sudanese government because it provides 6 percent of China's oil supply.

He said battles have been going on in the region for 20 years, with factions clashing for racial and religious reasons. Geldof said China protects Khartoum by not allowing a vote in the U.N. Security Council.

I don't know enough about this. Is China really protecting the Sudanese government, or is Geldof off his rocker? (Get it? Geldof! Rocker! It's a pun!)

Seriously, it seems like this war will never end. Is it because China keeps it going?

P.S. I don't know why this is listed under my "local news." I don't live anywhere near Sudan, as far as I know.

China and to some extent Russia have been activley trading weapons for oil in the region. How much of France's oil supply is involved I don't know, but they also have an opposition to sanctions in Sudan.

France led opposition to US moves at the UN over Iraq. As was the case in Iraq, France also has significant oil interests in Sudan.

He's largely correct. China has oil interests in southern Sudan, and is quite willing to block action against Khartoum in order to keep those operations running smoothly.

China has been involved in African genocide before, too. In Rwanda, most of the people killed were hacked to death by cheap machetes imported from China specifically for the genocide campaign. I don't have any reason to think China knew beforehand what would happen, but I doubt they cared much either.

(No, I don't know why I posted that, and yes, I'm aware it's not really on-topic, and why yes, I am glad I don't believe in Hell. Why do you ask?)

I doubt very much that any of the major powers gives a damn about what their clients do with the arms they provide. But China seems especially uncaring about what goes on outside their border.
