Did anyone hear Bill Moyers on NPR the other day? I am not a huge Bill Moyers fan. I always thought of him as tedious and vaguely pompous, but I was impressed. He was more ruthless (in the interest of truth from my perspective) with the administration and the press than I have heard any other main stream journalist be during all the long years of the Bush administration. It was almost shocking - coming out and calling a spade a spade and naming names and pulling no punches with anybody. He particularly skewered the press and the way it has shirked its first amendment responsibilities over the past 20 years. It was almost shocking. The role of the press to challenge orthodoxy rather report the sound bites from both sides and call that balanced reportage is critical to a truly free society. (yes, really bad sentence) The press has slid so badly over the past years that the press itself does not even recognize it. I don't know, I just wanted to mention it and how impressed I was with him.

Challenging orthodoxy requires critical thinking skills, and I'm not sure Bill is up to the job in that department.
